Hi guys

I recently acquired (deceased estate) a 2003 Grand Vitara XL7 and we have our first flat.

Went to unlock the spare wheel with the ignition key and it doesn't unlock.

Should there be a separate key to unlock the spare, if so I didn't get one with the car?

Ideas?

The ignition key should release the spare tire lock, but, if at any time the lock is replaced it is supplied with two keys that are unique to the lock.

The key does not turn to release the lock, you insert the key and then slide the lock assembly, with the key inserted, off the lock nut, so that the lug wrench can be used on it - it is theoretically possible that corrosion can hold the assembly together, try using a little force to pull it off, try penetrating oil and if all else fails, drill the lock cylinder out and slip the sleeve off.

Tried that , no luck. The key goes half way in , it spins freely but you can't pull it out.

I don't know what the XL7 one is like but with the spare wheel locks I've dealt with you insert the key and remove the lock cover with the key in it, you don't need to turn it.

The lock i had on mine from factory used a different key, more like a house flywire key (or small padlock).. the key went in and turned 90degrees to move a 'plate' that was the latch/lock. That was the stainless band type of cover that held in a plastic dome bit over the face of the wheel. You may find yours is similar and you're missing the proper key.
