Hi,

I bought a stock 1997 vitara 2L 5-door and wanted to know if it’s a bad idea to take it to rainbow beach and possibly Fraser Island.
What would be the easiest things to changes to get it more beachworthy? It’s not got huge amounts of ground clearance, can larger tyres be fitted or would other modifications be needed to do that?

Cheers

A taller tyre that’s not too aggressive will help, as will a front skid plate.
These cost money. Letting the tyres down is pretty cheap though.

Plain roadies are fine for beach sand. Drop the pressure way down and even the stock size will get you to some surprising places.

225/75x15 fits on stock rims, (IF you can find them)
I found some "Maxtrek" LT tyres at Tyrepower. Not a bad road tyre, and quite ok in sand at 10psi, although it does have a sharpish tread - sidewall edge.

Go out with a mate, drop the pressures 10-12 psi is a good starting point and go nuts. A 2L vitara is one of the best cars in sand. Just remember momentum is king and try and read the sand ahead so you have time to react.

I have one and regularly go driving on the sand, tire pressure is key otherwise go out there and have fun. Only issue I ever have is getting stuck in ruts from other bigger cars.

Cheers for the advice. I’ll let the tyres down and take a shovel/strap etc and see how I go.

Can't go wrong with maxtrax or some other form of recovery track, worth the money I reckon. I unbogged a skyline that took a wrong turn once with them!
