Post subject:  Carburettor with no choke
I have a g13ba sj70 and someone along the line has removed the entire choke assembly and left me squirting fuel into the throat of it to start it.

I have had immense trouble seeking a replacement carburettor or choke setup.

Is there anything I can do aside from running a can of start ya bastard into the cab?

Stock carby is difficult to get running well in my experience. Even had mine professionally rebuilt and it’s still a little up and down with regards to the idle.

Weber’s are ok, but I think they’re a bit too basic as far as choke setup but hat depends on your preferences and usage. I have a faj Weber copy on one of my Sierras and it works ok but does struggle on steep inclines, I believe it over fuels.

Corolla 4K are apparently the go as Fordem says (I haven’t tried them yet myself) and they aren’t expensive to buy new off eBay

I would've really have liked to use an original carburettor, I am well aware of the other options available, I was prying for another option :)

My mates has a weber copy on his, overfuels all day long :'D

I might have to seriouslly consider the 4k carby.

If your dead keen on keeping the original then you can try and put a rebuild kit through it. Honestly I don’t think it will help much. It’s tricky and without the dark arts that the carby guys seem to have behind you you might make it worse.

either that or get it professionally rebuilt, cost is around $550, at least where I had it done it was. Not sure where you are but the place I did mine have exchange and they could likely do it by post if there isn’t somewhere good near you. Perth Carburetor Specialist in Howe st Osborne Park

Brand new 4k carby it is. Without the choke gear for the og carby I got no hope. Thanks for the help dudes.

The choke is a common problem and lots of people remove it. It should start okay without it but you may need to pump the throttle a couple of times before you crank it over. It sounds like you might have another problem? How long between starts does it sit for before you have to prime it?

If you must have an original one I'd source a second hand one (ask on facebook groups) that's complete/unmolested and have it rebuilt. Still this is no guarantee of perfection as at this age shafts will be worn which causes air leaks. Honestly I'd never bother with the standard carburetor unless it was already working fine.

A new Corolla carb is only $91.49 on ebay and a layman wouldn't be able to pick that it's not factory.

I definetly have problem somewhere else other than the choke now that I think about it... I have not managed to start it without priming. It will turn over again without it if the engine is warm. I have tried everything I can do.

I am quickly ditching the idea of the OG and going to go with the 4k carburettor and just grit my teeth and learn something new.

I don't care too much about legality, she'll be right. ;)
