hi guys new to Suzuki's iv just brought my wife a 06 jtd54v with a j20a engine with a 15o,ooo klms had the car 4 days and it was perfect even I liked it! any ways on the 5 day we took it on a 5 hour drive went well until the last 300 metres when it got hot it didn't blow steam and we let it cool off but it did get rid of most of its coolant. Any ways got it back home [trailer] it has small bubbles in the radiator but it doesn't have a misfire or coolant in the oil ore coolant in the exhaust, but it is pressurising the cooling system,iv removed the thermostat and put a gauge on the radiator and it builds up pressure quickly the questions I have are these engines prone to head problems and how big a job is it to remove and replace the head? I imagine the head will have to be skimmed and crack tested and I'm told new head bolts are important is there any thing else I need to know ? |

Dealer Warranty? You bought a dud that's most likely overheated before you bought it. Removing the head will be pretty straight forward although its a largeish job and time consuming. I'm unsure about the timing chain. Crack tested and skimmed usually, New seals, New/Re-ground valves. includes gasket kit. $600-$1000 for a head rebuild, If the head is uncracked...if you take the head into a shop.. Probably more $ if you take it complete in the car still and need a new uncracked head New headbolts, Depends on engine types. I've only worked with the G16b's, Which don't need new headbolts Lets hope the block isn't cracked.. |

As far as I'm aware the J20 engines are not noted for cracking the head or block, and new head bolts are not a requirement - it's got to be one of Suzuki's better motors, it's been around since the mid 90's with very few changes. |

Its the bigger bored j engines that crack ie j24 |

I don't want to say "bigger bored", I don't think the J23s which are "bigger bored" have a head/block cracking issue - the J24s however are known for it. |
