hi guys
so me and the misses bought a new 2018 grand vitara and decided to take it on its first 4wd track a few weekends ago (if anyone is from the port macquarie area, the point plomber track) its a easy sandy track that i have taken my old jimny heaps of times and never have got stuck. so the first sandy section we got the vitara bogged nothing that maxtrax did not fix. but anyways to the point is it better to have the traction control turned off in the sand? it was also the end of the school holidays and the track had pretty deep ruts in the sand and the vitara is stock standered as well.

Doesn't the traction control re-engage if you exceed 40km'h regardless of whether it's turned off or not?

I just keep mine in low range than tackling hard soft bits
to easy to exceed the switch back on speed when in sand

TC is always better turned off in sand. Any form of TC via abs no matter what the manufacturer will be horrible in sand. For Most cars a switch hooked up to the ABS fuse fixes it and you can switch on and off as you need. But check the specifics of your car first and what’s the best way.

The reason why these systems suck in sand is because you are spinning wheels most of the time and in fact spinning to gain momentum. The ABS kicks abs and brakes causing you to loose momentum. In sand momentum is king.

I put a switch in a car recently, by interrupting the R/H/F wheel speed sensor, which the car then takes a a problem with the ABS & traction control, so disables them.
Yes, in high range, over 40km'h the car switches T/C back on.
Option to stay in low range, but can run out of speed - car involved (2010 Prestige N32A) apparently can indicate it's doing 90km/h in low range
I still want one.
A current 2.4 J24 would be unlikely to be able to do that.

ok, TC and ESP 2 different things depending on mode selected. And your vehicle age, from about 2008 onwards Suzuki changed how things worked. if your car has an ESP OFF button, the below will apply. if it doesn't then TC will remain on in 4LLock most of the time, but its pretty ineffective on these models.

in 4H mode, ESP and TC work reasonably aggressively 

TC obviously controls traction, braking the wheel spinning to divert power to the non spinning wheels
ESP limits torque overall to control car, so if 2 or more are spinning engine power is reduced

Bigest thing people do is lift off the gas when this happens, don't, keep steady gas applied and the ESP will sort things out and most of the time you move forward and carry on.

in 4HLock, ESP and TC are "dialed" back so they activate later, ESP can be turned of so torque limiting is removed allowing for more aggressive power delivery where you might spin more than one wheel at either end, like mud, snow etc.
Now when the switch is turned to 4LLOCK this is where the fun starts depending on what mode you were in when it was in 4HLock

straight to 4LLock from 4H will give NO ESP (esp off light on dash), but with TC, albeit even less responsive than in 4HLock to allow for the fact you're in low range, crawling and will have some wheelspin driving over obstacles such as rocks etc.
Now, if you are in 4HLock and activate the ESP OFF button and the esp oiff indicator is lit, then you select 4LLock, BOTH ESP and TC are off

that little gem is not in the owners handbook !!!
this allows what we in the trade call "full time derby mode" where you can get out onto a muddy paddock and go nuts with 4 wheel slides and no "fun police" trying to hold you back.

TC will only work for a short time in slippery conditions until it senses overheating on the brakes, then it deactivates and you have diagonal corner spinning scenario. You can "overpower" the TC as well, by being too heavy handed with the power delivery. This is why they added ESP to the mix.
