As the title said, sierra isnt too happy to start without any starter fluid down the carb, but once it starts, it will run fine. Have tried starting with throttle fully down and up - no luck. took air cover off to Check that there is fuel being sprayed when the throttle is depressed - there is a little squirt, so im thinking it may be a spark/coil or air issue? Is there a way to check the voltage from the coil? Also should the choke flap be fully open or close when cold starting?
Cheers guys

This is a fair indication that the problem is fuel rather than electrical.

Once it warms up if you try to start it again while it’s still warm does it give you the same problem?

To be certain you could test the spark on each cylinder, if you’re not sure how to do it there’s heaps of guides with a quick google search and it’s easy to do. If there’s a good strong spark (a weak spark is still a problem so make sure you know the difference) then make sure you check the timing. Those done you can stop playing with the electrical side of things and move on to fuel.

A general guide here is press the throttle down once, let it go, then start the motor. Some Sierra’s will take more encouragement than this if they’ve not been started in a few days-few weeks.

Not sure, but you can check the resistance on the primary and secondary coils and make sure they’re within spec. 1.65-1.35 ohms for the primary and 11-14.5K ohms for the secondary coil. Also check the earth and all the contacts while you’re there.

It should be closed when you’re starting cold. I feel this might be your problem, choke buggered

See how you go! Report back with your findings!!

Thanks for the reply! It used to start easily back up once warm, but last night I started it to head to the gym, then it wouldn't start again after about 45 mins sitting.
I did end up starting it this morning eventually and it gurgled and sputtered into life with a small white smoke cloud from exhaust. So now I'm thinking it be flooding

I’m guessing it’s the stock carby? Is the choke working at all?

45 mins is likely enough to cool down, but while it’s warm and running if you switch it off and try start it up again straight after will it start ok?

Yeah stock carby, got home today and warmed it up, and it would start fine after 1 throttle pump while warm. Will try again tonight when it is cooler, im assuming the problem will be the auto choke
