Went and looked at one in Mareeba today. They've lost the key, Ripped the ignition barrel off and just jammed a screw drive in the black plug to turn it over. No start. Is this a dealer repair ?

Are we talking no crank or no start? Did Suzuki fit immobilizers to 02 GVs in Australia? Did someone fit an aftermarket immobilizer? Do you think it was running when they parked it before they misplaced the key? Did you check to see if it had gas?
Do you think the air conditioner leaked into the ECU and killed it? Is the battery flat? Do you think a rat chewed the wiring whilst it was parked?

Do you have a crystal ball somewhere, because I don't, and I doubt that anyone else here does...

It was parked in their driveway, then key lost. Someone just ripped the ignition barrel off and put a screwdriver in the black plug from the harness and you could turn the motor over. I really was just wondering if you would get a auto electrician or a locksmith. We didn't go into why it wouldn't start, had other cars to look at. It had been a family car [f'n kids], Looked OK, anyone around Mareeba. Be a good buy, offer $500.

yep, an 02 GV will have a factory fitted immobilizer fitted, with sealed in chip inside key end.
so on the basis it is just a lost key scenario.
they'd be looking at either suzuki to recut/program a key... big $$$$$ or finding a replacement ecu, immobilizer control, and key, which would have to be from the exact year, engine, trans type. which could be cheap if they can find one.
