Post subject:  1st time engine install any gotchas I need to avoid?
After 2yrs in storage I finally sourced a replacement engine for my 95 sierra. I havnt done an engine swap/install before but worked small things on my various other cars ive owned eg gearbox removal/install, changed clutch on hilux, done my brakes and suspension ect.
Is there anything in particular that I need to be wary of installing a replacement engine on the sierras?
I have typed in as many phrases into the search bar as I can think of but seems to be no topics/guide on the actual install.
Is it so simple that one doent need a guide ect?

Gudday Lards!!

Glad you’re getting the jalopy back on the road!!

It’s pretty straight forward, no big traps that I’m aware of. Two things that spring to mind which can be a little tricky are;

the plate that sits between the motor and bell housing can be a pain, slips off and misplaces while trying to get the motor and the bell housing together. I’ve been known to pop a couple small cable ties on to keep it in place, once the motor and bell housing are close I’ll pull the cable tues out.

The other is getting the motor and bell housing together. You’re trying to get the gearbox input shaft to match the clutch splines and the end to get into the centre of the spigot bearing. The input shaft has to line up and be level, can be a little bit of a pain. I don’t have any real tricks, except it’s not a good idea to get the threads on the bolts started and try pull the two together.

And just in case you haven’t done so already, it’s a good idea to put a new clutch and throwout bearing while you’ve got the motor and gearbox apart. Unless you know when the clutch was last replaced it’s easy and cheap enough to do it and if it shat itself shortly after you’d be up for pulling it all apart again.

Take the front clip off and the radiator out. Then pull the motor and gearbox out as one unit. Replace the same way.

Not a rubbish idea at all!! Good way to clean up the seams and seal them off to keep the rust at bay.

Motor and box comes out pretty easily together even when front clip is left on. Only takes 5 mins to pull motor and box, cable tie the jackshaft into the back of the gearbox, this prevents oil spewing out the box when its on an angle.
Pulling front clip can be way more trouble than its worth

I also support pulling the clip. makes the rest of the job go so much easier.

I used this link the other day when I removed my front clip. It was much simpler than I first thought it would be.
