Hey all, making good progress with my stockman Put the old and new pieces back together, fixed some horrible custom wiring and have managed to get the f10a firing. However, it won't stay running. Currently there is no rad so the water pipes are all open. I also don't have the alt hooked up to feed back to the battery, but the other harness on it is connected. The vid linked is it firing on start ya bastard, but it does the same thing on fuel. I filled the carb bowl manually and then hooked up the fuel pump. I can see fuel getting pumped through the filter so I think that's good. When I crank it fires straight away and will run on if I keep the starter going. As soon as I stop cranking it stops like in the video. I had a quick look in the carb and the float and needle valve look fine. The jets look clean also. I also know my coil has power in the "on" circuit so should have spark too. What to check next? Cheers! https://youtu.be/AsN_Cg6C7zI |

Hi Mate, If you have been fixing wiring, is it possible that the ignition is only on when you are cranking? If so this would explain why it stops when you back the key off start cycle. Easy to hotwire the ignition on for a test. Hope this helps |

Thanks mate. I'll double check it. When I went through it with a multimeter before I connected everything up I had power to the coil on the "on" circuit, but having said that I was having issues with this circuit coz the fuse box is dodgy. I'll check it with the meter again and try hotwiring as well. Assuming the circuit is ok, what else could I look for? Appreciate the help! |

Finally had a chance to check things out. Think I found a few issues with the wiring. I have 12v going to the ballast resistor. This results in about 9v across the resistor to the +ve on the coil. However, I only have 1v on the +ve on the coil to earth, and less than 1v from the -ve to earth. Not sure if this is normal. If I try to hotwire the +ve terminal, the car tries to start. I think this is because I'm missing a diode between the starter circuit going to the +ve on the coil and the battery. Does that sound right? I have tested the resistance in the coil and the ballast resistor and it's all ok. If I put a test light on the -ve terminal of the coil and crank the engine the light flashes. Could it be as simple as the diode missing? |

when I read your first post my initial thought was ballast resistor. I've had it happen in the past, it'll fire while the starter is cranking but as soon as the key is released it dies. try bypassing the ballast resistor and see if it runs. don't run it too long like this if it does, it'll burn out the points. you can upgrade to a 1.3 electronic distributor with a 12v coil and bypass the ballast resistor permanently, for an improved ignition system. |
