Post subject:  Suzuki LJ81 engine conversion

Hi all,
I have just purchased a LJ81 with a 800cc engine as comes with stock LJ, but the power is just not enough and the engine is hardly working so I though it would be a good time to change the engine to something more powerful, I’ve heard that the Suzuki sierra F10A was a good choice as a bolt in but does anyone know another engine larger possibly a 1.3-1.6 Litre, which is as close to a bolt in as possible. For example, would a Suzuki Maruti 1.3 work or perhaps the G16B from a Vitara? Any help would be great.

F10 is the only close to bolt in option.
F/K6A 660cc turbo EFI 3 cylinder is also a good fit but won’t bolt in like an F10 as it also requires the 660cc 5 speed gearbox

F10a is a super easy swap, just bolts in. My LJ80v has an F10a and can cruise at 110 just fine, even if that's 5800rpm.

Anything is possible but it really takes a boat load of work to fit much else in an LJ. To fit a G engine you'd need to cut out and refabricate the gearbox crossmemeber, convert to a sierra steering box, custom jack shaft, custom engine mounts, source a 1998-2000 jimny gearbox for the remote shifter ect ect. Even then it won't really get you where you want to go, you'd need to find some 1l diff centers to drop the gearing which would still be very low, the transfer isn't really strong enough and it's quite a job to convert to a sierra one.

F10a is the easy swap .
But I found the F8a especially on factory 205’s to have heaps of power for an LJ , loved the revs and pulled well.
Are you sure you don’t have other issues ? Ie Carb / fuel or timing problems ?

Weight balance would be my issue with a G /M series engines . The small 800 or 970cc F series engines compliment the LJ well and have a lot to do with their great off-road ability

I’m not convinced a G motor is much heavier than an F8- that steel block is weighty. Obviously the G series gearbox, clutch and flywheel substantially heavier than the f series but I don’t reckon there’s much in the motor.

I know I can pick up a bare f series engine and I can’t a G13a . f8a is around 70-80kg , G13 is around 100-110kg
But it’s more that shape of the g series gearbox means the engine has to be further forward to fit the gearbox in the narrow LJ tunnel
