zukenutter wrote: did you consider widening the body over in-boarded wheel arches to gain more internal space or would that defeat the ease of build? These "Tear drop" trailers traditionally are built based on standard 8' x 4' sheets of plywood, so I will take a punt that the floor and roof are based on the 4' width of a sheet of ply. When these were originally built (in the 1940's) the aim was minimum wastage, minimum weight. The first commercially produced teardrops used wartime surplus aircraft aluminum- and jeep wheels which they salvaged from a wrecked ship! Ever since- the basic dimensions of 8' x 4' have stuck. stephen

Hadn't thought about standard width, makes total sense.

Sure, but you made it 8' long and 4' wide. Shoulda made it 8' wide and 4' long. You'll sleep better "east/west"
hehehe
Loving this build by the way...

Excellent Job! Have been thinking about something like this for short weekends away, and was wondering how hard it was. Definitely inspires me to clean out the garage, and have a go!! You guys should definitely look into getting some plans on a disk, and getting some money back to pay for your own. Once you've fully tested them, you could even look into building new ones, and selling the old ones off. Top work! I hope everything goes well for you!

Thanks for the feedback guys. These are really very good to sleep in for short trips and we will see how they go on the trip to the cape in June. Not much left to do on Keith's now. Just the rear kitchen, tail lights, jerry can holders and then good for rego. Missmyljdaze you are correct - these are built to minimise wastage using 1200x2400 (8x4) ply sheets and same size 1mm alloy sheets.

Can we get some set up pics of the inside? I'm guessing there isn't much room to swing a cat inside but i'd just love to see how much space there is.

Wow!!! Awesome!!! When I get around to it I'd love one of these!!!
Questions. How did you go about attaching the plywood to the chassis? Glued and screwed? Is the vertical walls braced in some way to the base and roof? Are you checker plating the under side? We're does the wiring for the tail lights run? What width axle did you use?

How did the trip north go? We're in the middle of an extreme southerly storm - hail, sleet, snow and heavy rain. Marine forecast is for "Severe Storm with Phenomenal seas" . The least I can do is read about someone enjoying heat while we suffer. Steve.

Still thinking of converting my trailer to something like this. Mine will be less complex and rougher, though. What were the final weights?

We did end up taking the back up vehicles to ensure we got there and back.Keith in a Bravo and Me in a Challenger. Had no mechanical issues with the cars. The trip was Awesome!! Vans held up very well. I only had two very minor issues with mine.. 1- Tore the Wiring Loom off as we came of the Ferry crossing the Jardine and 2- The corrugations rattled quite a lot of nuts loose (Wheel nuts and Suspension nuts).

Hey Strop, The doors came from Aussie Tear Drops here in Brisbane. They were not cheap. Will post some photos when I get a chance. Luhrsy68
