To go away camping and pack all the cool comforts the vit is getting a bit full, plus heaps of stuff tied down on the roof, bit of a pain in the ass, So it's time to build a trailer.
The aim is to have it as light as possible, smallish, and hopefully be designed well enough to get dragged through some really silly tracks with ease.

Picked up a rusted pile of crap, and stripped it for anything that might be useful

Want to get the axle up out of the way so I had the machinist at work knock these up.
Axle needed to be shortened to suit vitara wheelbase anyway, so worked out good.

Will that's a good start, this could get interesting. :)

The main body looks like a good width and might just be deceiving in that photo, but it looks pretty long.

Pic of the trailer frame there is of the crappy, heavy, rusted out donor trailer.
It got cut up and sent to the scrappy.
Start my new frame this week.

Do you think the axle will still turn on the U bolts. Is there a plan to stop the axle rotation?

Post subject:  Re: Jimmy's camp trailer thingo

Yep yep, perches on the axle, just like any other leaf setup.

OK, I expect you are going to weld them on to the axle? They will have a lot of force on them. Interesting to see how this turns out and whether there will be enough force to twist the spring. You should find out pretty quickly if the tyre rubs on the guards a lot. Interesting build.

Yep, welded perches to the axle. Just like any other leaf spring setup.

I presume your referring to the extra twisting load exaggerated by the leverage of the drop axle,
I don't really predict any issues. The trailer will be very light, and only carrying some camping gear.
With perches, and decent U bolts it should be just fine. There's no way it would ever get the wrap loading that a driven axle on a normal car or 4wd with leaf springs copes with every day?

Why a drop axle? You would have the same ride hight just going spoa

Axle clearance.

Post subject:  Re: Jimmy's camp trailer thingo

I've done a lot of 4wding with trailers over the years and have never found axle clearance an issue, the diffs on the vehicle will hang well below any trailer axle, just my 2c
Keep the pics coming I enjoy a good trailer build Armsup

looking good, i'd look at using cable ties as u-bolts instead of tape. pompoms

there are plenty of drop axled trailers floating around, i was keen on the idea for the same reason, axle clearance. but in reality, the pumpkin & axle tubes on the tow car are going to be grading the track first if your running matched wheels & tyres.

EDIT: dammit Mr Boobs beat me by |<---->| that much.

33's-35s on towcar, 31s on trailer, So I thought a little extra trailer axle clearance would be cool

Hoping to drag it into some pretty silly spots, so I kinda want to eliminate any chances of it being an anchor.
Light, small, good axle clearance.
We'll see how it goes I guess

If anyones interested.. the trailer I bought recently has a slightly different designed drop axle, they welded an extra piece of 40x40mm axle to the ends on both sides.. The clearance under the trailer is far better than a stock Jimny!
I believe they are called stub axles? Going over to a trailer shop to get brake mounts welded onto it this week :)

The drop axle is fine, it's the slipper springs that will let you down.
Think reversing up over a decent vertical ledge, all the force is opening up the slipper spring and it 'could' come apart.

Eye to eye is the way to go if you plan on dragging it into some silly places.

Keep the pics coming... :)

Cheers for the tip!
I might look into an alternative there. I'm not keen on slipper springs, but it's what I had sitting there.
I'll see what I can come up with.

I started with slippers as that is what I had, they got chucked out after a year or so.
They ate into the chassis, so I fitted extra plates for them to eat into.
But they then started to chew through the sides of the brackets.
Eye to eye with shox was much nicer handling, and less maintenance.
Rebound slippers may be a happy medium if wanting to keep things simple.

Teflon plastic is your friend! I've done some serious km's with my trailer with slipper springs.
Far more than just your average joe that use's their's for the odd camping trip. My chassis is fine, and the rear brackets have a little wear on the sides.
They're easily replacable unlike a chassis!
