Got a new manly man camper. Only weighs 355kg and has 10” electric brakes and a reverse cycle aircon  The plan is to make a new chassis, fit appropriate suspension and 15” rims, solar + battery and a water tank. Thinking a slide out kitchen as well but I have a pretty good camping set up so might not bother. Aim is to be under 600kg loaded. |

Aircon works really well however the annex won’t be any good in the tropics so will just add some cheap roll out awnings |

Work is stopping me from playing but I got a chance to have a bit of a look today. Plan is to build a basic chassis out of 75x50x2 the same size as the rails that support the existing suspension and to cut off all the bits stuck to the chassis like suspension, drawbar etc and then weld the existing chassis to the new one. Will reuse the axle as it has Al-KO 10” drums in ford stud pattern and fit 3 leaf eye-eye springs and skinny 15” rims with trailer tyres. Haven’t decided what hitch to use yet, was going to use a poly block but the one on my rubbish trailer has perished and cracked after only 4 years. Also picked up a 100L water tank and a pump big enough to run a shower that I will stick in front of the axle to try and put some weight on the draw bar as currently there wouldn’t be 5kg due to the A/C being at the back of the teardrop. |

Spent the week in Darwin for work so got nothing done except bought a 24” TV DVD thingo and while I was away my elcheapo eBay generator turned up. Thinking that I will stick to a poly block hitch as all my other trailers have them so no need to swap receivers etc |

Going to order the RHS for the chassis tomorrow, what are people’s thoughts on drawbar length? I am thinking about this long but only because it looks about right. Also scored a pretty neat drawbar box to store generator, battery etc |

drawbar needs to be at least long enough so the back door of the tow car clears the stuff on the trailer. looks like you got about that so 's'all good. |

Going to toss the slipper springs for eye-eye and go to 14" LT tyres/rims New chassis and suspension etc should lift it 200mm while keeping things as light as possible. Well that it the plan anyway

Work is fucked at the moment and lost last weekend thanks to having to go to Darwin and cut up trees thanks to a cyclone so haven’t achieved much with the man van. Have the chassis cut out and just gotta do a bit of bending and gluing so I can join all the bits together and use it. |

Narh jeep is 265/75/17 and trailer tyres get a bit expensive in 17" I don't like putting traction tyres on a trailer as I am sure they just throw rocks around and cost extra fuel to turn |

Sorry if this has been mentioned , I haven't read all the post. If it were me I would be putting the axle under the springs instead of on top, then getting a cheap pair of 15' wheels and shoving 265/75/15 10.5r 31" tyres as they are an easy to get size and the van will float on sand etc with those on. I did that to my box trailer about 20 years ago . The original 13" holden wheels with road tyres fitted used to just push through sand without hardly even turning, such a drag, LOL.. Now it floats and you can not even feel it's there..I got a new 6 stud axle and hubs made so it has wheels that match my 4x4 so I can use the spare if I need to... |

The wheel bearings are marginal with the original tyre size. If ya wanna run big tyres then ya need to have the appropriate bearings. Have seen many failures with exactly what you described. I do lots of kilometres so reliability is very important. |

On t'other hand, with the SOP Glamper being very light, you could possibly get away with a bit of that. A taller tyre may even transmit less shock over bumpy tracks than the short one ...

Work has been stupidly busy for the last few months but finally got a chance to get started on the chassis. Been so long since I used my welder that we had to hot rod it first before welding, now has the air line off a incendiary launcher as the gas line from solenoid to hand piece. Needs a clean up and a jam job but will be a billion times stronger then the 1mm C section chassis that it has now. |

Looking nice also with the shower it might be possible to stick some bar on the front and put some plate down with a drain to a jerrycan or one of those portable tanks add a shower tent and you have a outdoor and self contained shower. I got stuck into it today. Decided that the best way to do it was to get the new chassis off the ground and solid then as I cut the bits off the old one I would winch the pod onto the chassis. And fuck me dead it actually worked  Hopefully have it ready for rego in a couple of days. |

Very happy with how it sits behind the car, with nothing in the box it has about 30kg on the tow ball so heaps of leeway to add weight to the drawbar |

Got the generator box mounted properly and the wind down things welded on. Need to make a tyre mount, chop the guards up a bit, fit the water tanks and plumbing and then wire up a battery and all the 12V stuff. Got a bit of an idea what I want for the tyre mount but no idea what to do with the rest of the stuff. Also glued the chain on |

Had to put 10mm wheel spacers and cut a heap of bits out to make room for the tyres. Wired up the lights and brakes and took it for a shake down run. Seemed to work well. Best part is with big AGM battery, generator and 20L fuel it weights 600kg. Now just need to wire up the inside bits and do something with the awning and it is good to go. |

It leaked a little bit of dust but I think I can adjust the latches enough to stop it letting dust in, other then that it went real well. |
