I'm getting what appears to be a common whine in the rear diff or gearbox. I figure the first thing I can do is check/change the diff oil. Is it as simple as draining the oil out and replacing it? The manual also mentions a sealent, that I imagine you use on the thread of the plug, and using a torque wrench.

Is this the correct procedure?

PS, despite being told by many this is common, and to turn the stereo up, I'd really rather fix it

make sure you can get the fill bung undone before removing the drain bung, very hard to get oil back in the hole in the bottom

otherwise replace torque wrench with not too tight and sealent with she'll be right or thread tape and your laughing

Hey mate i had the same problem in mine so i put lsd oil in the diff and in the gearbox i put a friction modifier in with new oil and i now have no whines.

i would nearly bet my balls that it is your rear wheel bearings, if you do
much mud driving i would bet them.

mine wines like crazy to so change the oils lsd oil in the gearbox ay umm some sort of special mixture

Seriously though, LSD oil might help, but if it's been getting worse over time, it sounds like you have a bearing problem and it would be better to strip it down and replace the bearings now, than to wait till it goes bang

Would rear wheel bearings stop whining when I take my foot off the accelerator? Mine stops whining when I do.

jack a wheel off the ground and see if you have any movement in the wheel

even on the ground if you grab the rear wheel iand try to wobble it if the w/b are fooked it will clunk n knock.. if you jack it up.. try spinning the wheel as well as give it a wobble..

time for a rear disk upgrade kit to huh joe... speaking of.. yet available!!??

I have the same issue.

I used to get a whine in 4th and 5th when applying power from 55km/h onwards.

Last weekend was wheeling at wombat, and on the way home noticed a heavy grinding noise.

Pulling the axles out, I found one bearing was close to rupturing, the other one didnt look to flash either.
Replaced both of these and inspected the diff bearings and diff oil. Diff has no metal in the oil at all, and the pinion and bevel gears worked fine.

Everything seemed fine, after reassembling and testing I still get the whine and am starting to notice a shudder.

Next step is to inspect the driveshaft, and transfer case mounts. The transfer case was rebuilt with series 4 rockhoppers about 4000 kms ago.

UPDATE: The whine didn't disapear for long, and was informed the gear box had dropped a bearing.

I was too lazy to do anything about it, and let the whine go on and on. 6,000 kms later the annoying whine, turned into an unbareable scream, and the rear diff pinion seal started to leak oil.

Replacing the diff bearings, crush tube and seal fixed it completely. Driving the zook is now wonderful, can't believe I left the annoying whine go for so damn long.

Heres a question for those who may know. If you start to get a whine, and theres a little play in the pinion, can you retorque the pinion, and further crush the crush tube?
