Awww....spewin!

Well, I guess I'll have to assume the 1.6 and 2.0 V6 are the same besides overall length. That is unless anyone else has one lying around they can measure?

Thanks anyway Royce.

As for the the ebay shafts being made in Taiwan, I had already assumed that the quality would be a little bit questionable. One of the Perth CV specialist shops had told me if it comes down to it, he could probably machine something up.

I appreciate the offer, but I don't think that will help. I'm pretty sure my original shaft is the same as what is in the Grand Vits to start with, hence all the headaches. So whilst I'm grateful you would be willing to pull yours out, I don't want you to go to all that effort to only find its the same. The shaft really needs to be out of a early 2.0 H20A Vit.

GV is a different diamter around the outside of the CV, that could be an easy way to spot the difference

Do you mean the diameter of the Green Inner CV housing part?

Ok.... I'll leave it up to you. Only if it isn't too much hassle. And thanks again, you've been most helpful. Like you said in an earlier post, I only hope the mucking around can help someone else down the track as we learn from this.

Tell me about it. I'm fed up with it. Bad enough pulling out the diff once, let alone 3 times. I was really annoyed on my last 4x4 outing. I drove three hours to my favourite beach, partially drove the 4wd track in. Got to a massive dune that requires driving the car hard so I got out and stuck my head under the car to make all sure was ok (up to this point I thought I had fixed the problem) but no...... shaft hanging out again. Turn around, back home. Major dissapointment.

I think I will just bite the bullet and order a shaft from a SV620. Hope it pays off because it will be a fair bit of money wasted if not.

Just sell it if it dosen`t fix it, It has to be worth a try..

I was told that the 1.6 are the same as 2.0 4cl, just the center shaft a different length.. He is only a nissan tech tho..

Just to keep people up to date (for those that are remotely interested), I dropped my diff assembly off at ARB Perth Head Office and the service centre gurus went over it with their measuring aids and they too are left scratching their heads. They are going to strip down my diff tomorrow and try and sort it. I'll keep yas posted.

Interesting thing is...I just got a PM from Atari and now his car is doing the same (same set up). Actually, if you read this Gus, it may pay to report yours to ARB as well as Perth is going to ring Daniel Bongart (or whatever his name is.... chief ARB engineer) and look into it. Two reported cases in one week will carry more weight than one and less likely to get swept under the carpet. Just a thought.

Hi Stuey,

How is it all going here? I am about to follow a similar path except I will not be doing a 5.12 center swap, heading down to Sydney this weekend to pick up my steel diff housing (still havn't found a stelel carrier but hopeing I can do this later) and then I am off to ARB to take advantage of an offer they have ATM.

Do you think your problems may be related to the steel diff housing?

Thanks
Mike :)

Mike, just checking but you do realise that the steel carrier is actually more important than the housing? If you are putting in a locker, the carrier is the part that needs the most beefing up as it is this part that most commonly fails on the stock alloy equiped Vits. Yes it could be done later but..... extra $$$ for labour unless you are doing it yourself. You would be up for easily another $250 - $300 i recon if you had to take your car back to ARB to swap the locker from the alloy to the steel third member. But that is entirely your call. Most people only upgrade the actual housing because they can at the same time. I dont know of many stuffed housings besides those smashed hard into something.

I dont really see how either but in ARB's application guide it states that when putting in a locker in a Grand Vit, a third member from a Vitara must be used. I dont see why you would swap to an alloy carrier if the Grandy Steel one is perfectly ok. They also mention the hubs, splines etc but obviously that is not relevant in this case. I guess im just clutching at straws now :(

I'll wait to hear back from the experts (but given my phone call to them this arvo they aren't having much more luck than me.

Ok, just thought I would update this in case anyone does a search on this topic later.

I picked up my diff from ARB today. After measuring all components, the ARB boffins compared my original 4.6 centre in the original alloy housing and carrier against the steel grand vitara housing and third member containing an ARB RD88 air locker with 5.125 R&P. It was determined that the fault was in fact with the locker. To rectify the problem, the ARB side gear was machined down by 20 thou to enable the circlip to lock in correctly. All work was repaired as a warranty job at no cost to me. However, I am unsure if this has been officially documented with ARB head office as a potential problem.

Should anyone need to contact ARB to cross reference this problem, I dealt with the service manager, ARB Perth Office, Osbourne Park.

I only hope this info spares someone the headache I've been through.

To be honest Joe, the bracket I got off your car hasnt been installed yet. Diff hasnt been in the car since I got it from you! Hopefully this weekend. I might pop over in the next day or two to grab that socket. My neighbour has kindly lent me his motorbike so I have transport while I put my car back together.

That's good news Stuey, I haven't heard back from ARB adelaide, I will give them a call & let them know how you got on.

Just to update this thread it looked like I as going ot have similar problems with the drivers side CV popping out too easy. The fix ended up being to modify the CV (the spline actualy). I believe to allow the axel to slide in further.

That was an option, but the ARB perth staff chose not to do this as they were concerned the outer cusp lip on the inner CV would chew into the Oil seal if pushed further in to the housing and cause premature wear. Hence they chose to machine the side gear on mine. After the recent power lines run with my car, I can safely say the problem is definately fixed.

Another consideration was that should a driveshaft get damaged, I wouldn't need to get one machined again. If broken on a trail and very remote, I could order an off the shelf part for repair or even carry a spare.
