So I am not really that impressed with the sound quality in the Jimny and was wondering what others have done...

Not looking at anything flash...perhaps just some better speakers. Not really keen on having to do too many mods at this stage.

Just want to be able to hear it over my exhaust with my window down at 100.

Get some other speakers. That should be better, if not, Change the head unit.

Then you will want your zorst louder.

Then you will want the stereo louder.

Then you will want your zorst louder.

Then you will want the stereo louder.

Its a never ending story..

OMG Fully Tabouli!

The main problem with the standard sound system is that it only has two small speakers L&R at the feet of the front occupants. I added a pair of tweeters which sit at the base of my windscreen pillars on the dash. They are just wired piggy-back style to my head unit front channel. In the rear I added an 'off the shelf' sub box from SuperCheap.

This set up works real nice and has plenty of grunt to be heard over the tyres, transfer case and exhaust.

Parfittron has used the speaker mounts behind the plastic in the rear passenger footwell. You'll need to pull a few interior panels to get to it though.

I fit 6.5 inch 100w speakers in the front kick panel where the tiny ones use to live. (are mounted to the panel) still need ones in the back =[ but i'm getting around to that.

09 jim doesn't have one of those extra big head units does it?

if it does and bigger speakers don't do it for you you can get a amp to run off your head unit. just means you don't have to mess around pulling apart and changing your dash just to get a new head unit in. and your speakers will never make horrible distortion sounds.

Hey mate,

i have fitted a bit of a sound system to mine. in the back where the front seat belts bolt into the side (just behind the front door) there should be grilles there foe speakers. there arent any in there, but if you take the trim off (which involves removing all the plastic in the back as well as the back seats, you can put sme in... there is also a connector on the passenger side about half way along under the rear side window which is wired up to the front of the car to the stereo (in theory, mine worked)
i have also installed a small slim subwoofer from jaycar under the drivers seat to help the bottom end. all the speakers are 4 inch which i just run off my alpine head unit. I have Focal speakers which have a great kick for a 4 incher. if you buy the poly glass model (like 400) they come as components, so you can mount the tweeter on the dash.
my stereo thumps loud enough to head it over the road at 120 with the muddies, no worries. just make sure you screw in the kick pannels well, or they will rattle. the stock head unit shoudl be wired for 4 speakers ven though it has 2 installed.
good luck

Cheers
Chris

Thanks guys. Given it is used for packing a lot of gear in every spare hole in the car I don't want to head down the path of an amp or sub yet - yes it has the double head unit.

I do have the speaker mounts in the rear side of the car - will hook some good speakers up to that and see if there is a difference.

To be honest for a $20,000+ car you would think it would have at least 4 speakers!

that is why i find the jaycar under seat sub perfect... space you would most likely not use, and it tucks up enough for the back seat to have space for their feet. and only about 150 for that extra punch

id doubt that it will have a sub out on it, but im sure it would be a 4 channel, and infact it should be wired up to the rear plug as i described in a previous post. if you want to run a sub, you would need to get a low pass filter from somewhere like jaycar, though most of those sub with amp combos usually have a through put, so you just run the rear speaker cable via the sub where it will filter out the low end and play it through the sub. could draw you up a diagam if that would help you
