Hi,
as my last post "help burn it to the ground," I still can't get this bucket of sh"t to idle... It's really frustrating me. I've taken it to mechanics and they have told me a carby rebuild or replace. So I got a second hand carb and it ran intermitant. So I stripped both down and rebuild 1 good one out of 2 using new gaskets, pump etc. Seemed to run ok after this was done. But got 500 meters down road and it stalled when foot on clutch. Got it home and it wanted to idle again. Let it sit overnight then tried again and it wouldn't run. Changed "anti dieseling solenoid" & the other electric thing for the "throttle return to idle thingy" and it ran for a little while then stuffed up again. Every now and then it will idle really rough, and when you go to turn lights on for the idle up, it "suffercates" and stalls. But sometimes it works fine. Turn the key off, wait 30 secs or so then start and check it again, it either won't idle or idles really rough. There seems to be no clear pattern of faults. It's just random. Only common thing is when it is cold I seem to have the most dramas.
Please... Someone has to have had this???
Unsual things that I have found were... Charcoal canister rantles like there is sand in it. And the vacuum hoses for the "do hicky thing" on the distributer and charcoal canister have very little suction... Doesn't make a difference if these are unpluged.
Also the gasket set for the spacer plate that goes in between the carby and intake didn't hav holes for some ports out the bottom of the carby...
Thanks in advance. - hopefully at finally resolving this.

How clean were you when rebuilding carby? Did you change the needle and seet etc? I imagine a small bit of something floating around would cause grief like this

Yes the whole kit was used, extremely clean. Stripped pretty much everthing out and cleaned it. (actually did it twice because i took shortcuts first time just to see if it would run.) but I feel that that carbie is as clean as new.

Did you tune it after re fitting it??
Try playing with the idle mixture screw & idle screw.
All so see if the intake is tight.
The vaccume "thingy" on the dizzy should only have vacc on it once off idle & you won't notice much diffrence free reving.

Ok cool. Yes I've tried playing with idle screws. Haven't been game enough to touch mixture screw as it was running fine at that mixture ratio a few weeks ago. If it was mixture, wouldn't it be constant non idle or rough idle. Doesn't seem to blow smoke and choke seems to be working properly... Has got me stuffed..
Problem is, when you think you have adjusted idle correctly, as soon as you turn the car off then back on, it is out. As in won't idle, idles really high or really rough..

im betting its something electrical...
check the wire connecting the dizzy to the body of the car... i had the same problem at one point, sometimes ran fine, sometimes wouldn't idle, sometimes idled rough, sometimes idled too low and other times it idled around 2200rpm... found the wire connecting the distributor to the body of the car (the earth wire) was half melted. i couldnt undo the screw holding the wire to the car, so i ran a wire straight to the negative terminal of the battery, and the car works perfectly fine...
my moneys on some form of electrical problem...

Cheers whincup. I was digging through some old post a few nights ago and saw your commet about this to another guy so I checked it and it seems ok. I Will double check it but, just to make sure, because I didn't try to undo it. I was starting to head down the electrical path...
At one stage I had open throttle and it felt like it was running on 1 cyl doing 50 rpm...

Mixture can need change with diffrent air temp, just cause it ran Ok before you stripped it, key word STRIPPED it, you will need to adjust it again. Don't be scared of a lil screw, give it a go.

could be the coolant pipes in your carbie are blocked, could be that your choke is coming on when it shouldnt- mate has this problem with his because the spring broke. His car wont idle and runs very rough with no power- easily fixed with a ziptie

Dont stress mate.
I have EXACTELY the same issue...
I am running a weber carb though, unsure of what you have.
But over the past 3 months, I have done the following:
Removed and cleaned the entire fuel system.
Tried multiple different fuel filters.
Bypassed the complete fuel system.
Checked all vacuum hoses.
Re kitted the carby. Tuned it.
Bought a new carby. Tuned it.
Replaced and sealed all new gaskets.
All new threads and nuts.
I have pretty much negated every possible issue.
The only thing I have found is if I block 3/4 of the primary intake on the carby that it will run perfect.
So there must still be some kind of fuel / air / vacuum issue.
Vote # 1 - Sierra bon fire.

my issue i believe is now fixed, what i found was on the second barrel ( i think thats what its called) it was actually seizing on different positions and it was allowing it to either open up and stay open, and car would runn around 2000 revs, (sometimes i get it upto 6000!!! )
or it wouldnt open and she wouldnt idle, I have since taken it out and cleaned all the gunge off it and used a little buring tool to remove the little bur tat was there, and now it moves like a little baby trying to crawl and havent had an idle issue since,
I probably havent used the correct terminology, but can get a photo to point out what it was. (im a mechanically injected diesel lad, None of these fancy carby things for me)

Cheers for the replys. I've been meaning to update this thread. I have managed to get the car to idle resonably well now (not to mention want33s time & advise - top bloke!!), but still have an issue on light throttle. As in coming off idle and accelerating, it tends to stutter then will be fine. Have been playing with timing and have found my 'sweet spot' but it seems to randomly ping. So will look at doing plugs dizzy and leads.
And the fix for me was either new fuel hose from pump to carb (loose particles breaking in hose) or HIC - hot idle conspensator, or idle jet stuffed. Swapped the jet over, but the old one seemed fine. Could see through it, blow through it etc....

Well.....
Elecs were done today. Plugs, dizzy cap, leads, rotor, and the result......... Nothing! Still a stutter. Played with timing again and flogged the arse out of it for a few hours and had the idling issue arise again.
With lights on it idled between 200 - 600 revs but then went back to normal and couldnt get it to play up again..
I tried bending the acceleration pump rod to adjust the pump stroke but was unsuccessful, so I installed a second hand one back on it.
I am thinking about ripping the carby apart again, but first wanted to know if anyone has had luck with swapping the primary and sec jets over and stretching the spring. Or better yet, install both secondary sized jets into the carby (i have a spare)?? I have been reading around about this mod and it seems that people are happy with it, but will it cause issues down the track?
My other problem was trying to adjust the idle mixture screw. Is there an easy way or trick to do this without the proper tool (pn: 09918-38310)??

Hey mate yeah everything seems ok. No physical movement or damage to any parts on the carby. The choke works as it should and isn't sticking. Only thing is, it seems to run rich. And wanted to know a "shortcut" or trick if any at attacking the mixture screw. I've been down pretty much all roads except for mixture.
Was curious about swapping the jets over too...

Ok now for the good news... Attacked the mixture screw and managed to wind it in a bit to lean it out and what do you know.. Stuttering is almost gone. Will monitor it and re-adjust in the next few days.
Yes I know stekky told me... Lol

dropped the revs and attacked it with the corner of a flat blade screwdriver. Kind of butchers it a bit, but as long as the shaft turns along with the spring, it works.
Still needs more tinkering, because it's a real pain in the arse when the car is cold.
