G'day guys, recently my 1 litre went bang (number three cylindr let go). I have totally rebuilt it, everything from the clutch forward is either new or reconditioned.

The motor was running like a dream for the first few days, but then I was driving along the highway the car seemed to start "surging" at around 100ish. When I backed off it went away and then when back at 100ish it started every now and then. Over the next day it got worse to the point that the car would not get above ninety and then eighty and so on, but it drove fine around lower speeds.

The car was backfiring every now and then so I thought it may be fuel. Changed the fuel filters (before and after the pump), the car ran fine agaiin for about 50km then gradually got bad again. Have taken the carby off, cleaned the jets, changed filters again, and taken tank off. The car now backfires a lot, the engine is slow to respond to accelerator and it almost feels as if you are trying to drive with the hand brake on, there just seems to be no power.

Every time I change the filters it runs great for a little while, What else do i nee to do????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You said you took the tank off, i assume you thorougly cleaned it out and blew out the lines while it was off?

are the filters you are taking off clogged?

do you still have points?

While the tank was off I rinsed it out as best I could with some clean petrol (swirled it round and then tipped it out), how do i go about cleaning the fuel lines out?? What is the best way to clean out the tank, I am sure that it has to be something to do with the fuel system, I am going insane, as this is my daily druver and I live 40km from work!!!

The filters taken off do have a bit of crap in them, but the last ones I put on look fine.

Yes still have points.

The engine seems to idle fine, just starts to backfire when under load and no power when trying to drive.

Coil is rooted, or your rotor button is rooted or I am wrong.

Inside your disdributor you will find an earth lead see that it has not broken or is well attached if there is not a very good earth in there you will get these type of problems

My car had similar symptoms a while back.
After trying many of the things already suggested i replaced the distributor.
Car is fine now.

I pick the condensor and the points are now burnt

is entirely possible the fuel pump isnt keeping up cause of a blockage or dodgy tank breaather too but makes it hard to explain the backfire

Thanks guys, will look at the dizzy stuff. Replaced the dizzy cap and points as well, so the cap should be fine. Will check points and rotor button (button was not replaced).

Royce - I thought it would be fuel ie blockage etc. but was scratching my head re the backfire too.

Hopefully it is the dizzy as suggested.

Well the suzi is close to being set on fire!!!!!!!!!!

I have changed the points, condensor, and rotor button. To put my mind at ease I pulled the petrol pump out to check and see that it was working. Now that I have put it back in it is not pumping petrol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So i have not been able to check and see if the other suggestions fixed the original problem!!!!!!!!!

How do I get the petrol pump working guys.

I had exactly the same problem but opposite, car would back fire
and run extremely rough at idle, but under load/at revs it had no trouble
at all. Turns out it was a vacuum line to the carby.

Could it be the vacuum advance (if it has one) on the dizzy?

Any ideas as to what I need to do to get the fuel pump going again?

When you put the fuel pump back on, you made sure the pin in the head was back in?? ie: didnt fall out when you removed the pump...
