Hey all,
There are a couple of noises coming from the back of my car that I am not overly comfortable about! I apologise in advance if I use wrong terminology - just trying to sound like I know what I am asking about 8)

97 Coily (shhh) Hardtop:

When taking off at lights, you release the clutch and hear a clunk. This also happens when changing into second. I have jumped under - checked all the uni's and they seem tight as. What does have a bit of play is the 'tailshaft?' (that goes from the back of the transfer into the diff) - you can rotate it a little and kinda replicate that clunk? Can anyone explain to me firstly if this is normal - which ill assume its not, and possible things it could be, and how to check further.

Second thing - which im guessing is un-related is the rotation of the diff. So you have the car on flat ground - push it back and forth so its rocking, if you jump under the car you can see the diff is fixed with the wheels (obviously thus handbrake) but is rotating in relation to the body.

How much of this 'twist' is acceptable (and is there are better name to call it?) I assume the trailing arms are there to stop this, and I should be looking at the bushes? As you can see when you are rocking the car that there is a fair amount of movement. If it is something I should be replacing, how difficult is it to do without a press?

Any help is muuuuuch appreciated!

Sounds like your rear radius arm bushes are flogged out.
Would explain both the noise and the movement.
Not easy to replace the bushes without a press but not impossible either.

the clunk is bearing wear in your diff, best sorted out by a diff shop

if you rock the car while looking at the trailing arms mounts at the diff can you see them moving independant to each other? you would get some rocking with the handbrake on but teh trailing arms would swing with it

Ok will do!

Yeah, trailing arms definitely moving independently from the diff.

Sounds like enough cause to give it a go. Where abouts do you grab a new set?

I'm no Coily expert but I've seen a few guys on here say Suzuki.
If you don't like Suzuki's price then look elsewhere.. Try all the usual suspects.. EG: Ripco, Bursons etc.

Gday mate, its probably bushes, hard to say with out see it but I've had a coily in the past and same thing with jimny, If the bolts holding the trailing arm to the diff and trailing arm to chassis are loose it will allow the bolt to move in the diff housing holes or chassis holes.

normally happens off road crossing a rut or something.

get a spanner on thoses bolts tighten them see if it removes the click.

If you can see the bush is torn well there is no point doing this but I'd thought I'd share.

My Jimny Friends and I call this the " Jimny Click"
