Okay so me and my best mate were cruising allong in the zook the other night, just going over that bridge out the back of brookside shopping center next to the motorbike training place when someone decided it would be fun to peg a waterbomb at my windscreen -_-

Gave us both the fright of our lives and if it had been any one of my sisters driving they probably wouldhave had an accident... Anyways i wasnt happy so i went around the front, got out, checked the car, then decided to go back and see if i could find who did it.. It was 12:30 at night so there wasnt many other people around and i thought the best way to see who it was would be to go into the motorbike training area and shine my spotties around.. So i drove over the concrete block thingys (gate was shut) and lit up the whole creek area looking for who did it.. couldent find them so i drove back over the concrete block and came home..

Now heres the annoying bit.. ever since then (cant remember it doing it before that night) my steering has felt really weird.. it feels kinda loose, like it now has power steering or something.. usually when i go around big corners it gets really tight and heavy and you can really feel it.. but now it just feels loose.. also when im driving and i turn it doesnt seem to do much at first.. then it kicks and turns hard unless your reaaaally carefull.. dad seems to think ive broken a tooth or something in my steering box?? what do you guys reckon? is this a cheap fix? Have you jacked the front up and checked all the joints for play?

That's where id start. Jack it up on some stands and just give the wheels a wobble left to right and you'll feel the play.

To be honest i've never heard of people breaking teeth in a steering box, then again i haven't been around all that long ha.

and make sure you haven't bent anything driving over the cement blocks

yeah bent something is my bet... most likely the tie-rod and your wheel alignment is out.

I've seen this before when either the rod end/taper joint on the pitman arm or at the other end of the drag link have play. Essentially you have play in your steering because until you've turned enough to contact the side of the rod end nothing will happen. Then generally the steering will shoot of until the free play takes up on the opposite side of the knackered joint, all the while your fanging towards something usually really hard and at a decent pace. Not fun!!

As the other guys said, jack the front, get someone to hold the steering wheel steady while you try turn the tyre left/right. If you've got enough play to cause your symptoms I think it'll be obvious which connection is flogged out.

Myles check the rubber joint between the steering box and the steering shaft. I am not up on coily's but dont they have the track rod behind the diff housing instead on in front like a leafy, if so you would think it is less prone to damage.
