how much steering play is acceptable/normal for a leaf sprung sierra?
mine has around 30 to 40mm of play each side before much steering actually happens. although if you watch the pitman arm it does move slightly even though all you can feel is the freeplay in the wheel. i have tightend up the steering box but this hasnt helped. im thinking its the play between the worm gears in the steering box? i havnt been to concerned by it, as most of my driving is short distance. but its downright scary when on the hwy country roads etc. so would like to improve it if possible. any ideas or is this just the nature of the beast so to speak?

If the pitman arm is moving, look at the tie rod ends, or even shackle bushes.

or rear end spring bushes in the front as per half my troubles

jus checked tie rod ends and they are ok. def steering box as the top ''input'' shaft turns a qaurter turn and the pitmarn arm only jus budges also the shaft that the pitman arm connects to has sideways play when the wheel is turned.

dude are you coming on sunday? if so, have a feel of my steering... its abotu what you describe... basically its a stuffed steering box, but mines been like this for yearrrrrrs now and im just used to it. I consider the 'free play' a run up before the steering gets heavy. lol

also- my 'free play' when used on the freeway keeps me in my lane... while it doesnt feel like its doing anything through the wheel it is making minor adjustments to the steering.
