hi,
was going to change the oil in the transfer case of my vitara i just bought as i dont know when it was last changed by the previous owner. however, i thought the plug took a 3/8" drive ratchet but it appears too small and it done up very tight and i didnt want to round the hole. does it require a 1/2" drive to undo it? im just worried about rounding the hole in the plug and stuffing it completely.
are there aqny other tips for changing the transfer oil i should know? and does the same apply to the diffs?

its not 3/8 its 10mm

you can get tapered square edged tools that fit a lot tighter and dont slip out as easy but yeah they are a problem, I have drilled and used screw extractors on about 4 in mine

ah cool thought it would be something like that. sucks my service handbook doesnt say so. ill have another go at it when i get the tool.

the sharper the corners of the square tool you use to get it out the better it will work, using a ratchet is crap cause its all rounded so slips out

I had the same question, so thanks for info. Is the 10mm square drive available as a socket or is it a dedicated tool?, and where can i buy one?. it will save the grief and my knuckles...

It is called a sump plug remover, funnily enough.
Usually you can buy sets of them at most auto shops, but I have never soon one by itself.

I found this key tool at an Auto1 store in Perth problem is they only had it in AF size. Any one have one? does it work?.

I angle grinded and old wheel brace into a square sump plug remover, that worked.
I changed all my Sierra ones to a spanner type, not sure if these would fit Vitara or not.

where did you get the spanner ones? been to two different shops and they just me that you can't buy them

I took the old plug into my local bolt place and they gave me a hex head substitute. Alternatively lowrange sell little bits and pieces like this

My Sierra had a mix of square, hex and ring spanner types on it.
Must depend on year, or Suzukis frame of mind at the time.

And front diff filler plug was permanently stuck, so refilling was thru breather pipe...and gearbox filler was unreachable due to 1.o to 1.3 conversion, so refilling was thru the gear stick hole lol )

Suzuki have had different heads on their plugs over the years, but they are interchangeable. See This thread.
