Hi everyone,

I had a few problems with my transfer case in my Suzuki Vitara a couple of months ago where my right wheel kept getting stuck in 4 wheel drive, so the mechanic took the bearing out of the free wheel hub.

My question is how do you fit the bearing back into the free wheeling hub??

Is it hard?? And will it take all day??

are they auto free wheeling?

probably your best bet would be to get hold of some manual free wheeling hubs and fit them instead

It is manual free wheeling, Im just not sure how to put the bearing back in.

oh ok, i dont know what they did then, I took the car to 4x4 excellence and it says on the invoice that they took out the bearing in the free wheeling hub lock so it wont get stuck in 4 wheel drive, but I have fixed the transfer case now so i can put the bearing back in.

its all a bit strange as 1 hub locking wont usually make the driveshaft turn anyway and if they removed a bit I would think the hub is faulty anyway, sometimes the toothed locking dog can come loose and jam in locked but any competent mechanic should be able to reassemble it without even needing tools so its strange they would remove a piece

No its the bearing that locks it into 4 wheel drive, its probably around 8cm dia.

No such animal I'm afraid. There are no bearings in the free wheeling hub.

There is a small detent ball that Reubs mentioned, some circlips, a dog gear and an o-ring. Thats it!!

The Vitara free wheeling hubs fitted to my GV have a bearing in them. I know for a fact as we pulled the hubs off out and cleaned them at Alex's and GeePees place. They didnt know either. No idea how to change them or even what they are for though.

are you talking about the bit held on by 6 10mm headed bolts or the bit held on with 6 12mm headed bolts?

In the body, I think its to keep the teeth on the clutch from contacting with the hub due to vibration etc when in freewheeling position.
