Ok.. So I have recently fitted an Airtec snorkel onto my Sierra..
And I have gone to connect the snorkel up to the air intake..
BUT.. I have discovered that the pipe that I am supposed to be connecting the snorkel up to.. Is sucking in little if not no air..
I have NO idea why!!
I pulled the air filter box off and checked for cracks etc. But none exist.. So I would like to know.. Why on earth the thing isn't sucking in air!

Start the car, then look for air flow.

the 1.3L at idle the air speed into your snorkel head will be about 0.7m/s
(assuming idle 800 rpm, snorkel head 100mmx120mm)
1300cm^3 / 2 (for 4 stroke engine)
* 800rpm/60 (rev/s) = 8667 cm^3/s
Velocity = 8667 cm^3/ 10cmx12cm (snorkel opening) = 72cm/s



Can you take a picture so we can see what the set up is?

Do you still have the air-thermo system on the 1.3 intake?
(the plastic box with vacuum operated flapper to select warm air from extractors, or cool air originally from the back of the engine bay near the battery).

If so, and being in cairns, I would remove the crappy corrugated piping for the intake to the air-thermo system, and remove the air thermo system, and pipe directly from the airbox to the snorkel.

Consider improving the drain in the bottom of the air box (I drilled it out to 10mm and installed some pipe and a tap for water crossing), as you may find you will have more water and foreign matter entering the air box (unless running a prefilter) than before.

And here is a pic of the entire thing. I was going to remove that vacuum pipe all together.. But that means it wouldn't have been going through any filters:

I have also made up a new seal for around the edge of the air box.

thats right, were you expecting cyclonic winds?

remove that vacuum hose and block it at the manifold, it will give you trouble otherwise

Oh... Block it as in at where it enters near the carby?
What would I block it with?

you can get little rubber bungs for blocking off vacuum ports

Ok. I will buy 1 today..
But if I put my hand over that intake where I am going to put the elbow joint, shouldn't it create a vaccum??

Oh.. Ok.. I feel very little suction even on my hand tho? IS that still alright?
I always assumed that there would be a fair bit of air going into it.

Dude you've got the engine breather pipe pumped into the airbox as well and thats like a 20mm ID tube which would still feed the engine at idle even with your hand blocking it off. There also a lil drain hole at the bottom of the air box. Id block this up as well if your going to be doing deep water crossing and want an air tight snorkle

Hahaha ok.. Well that makes sense now.
No Iwon't be doing anything too deep anyway. It is just in case the water splashes over the bonnet.
