I usually set it so it deflects about 10mm, that's what the manual says from memory.

I've got the same problem. There doesn't seem to be a way to adjust it very acurately other than wedging a big screwdriver in there to lever the alternator downwards while boing the bolt up. Mine barely deflects at all but still squeals.
I heard a bit of talcum powder can make it grip a bit better, I'm going to try that next.

When it snap's.....
tighen it up, use a leaver to move the alt, forget all you have been told about belt's & go tighter, or it will squeal.
I have never snapped one & have tightened the bejebus out of em, 1/2 expecting the car to be back in the next day with no belt, 12 month's later & still going strong, there are suzuki's out there I fitted belt's to 5yr's ago still going strong..

thats not the problem though, if its to tight it loads up the water pump bearing and the alt bearing and makes them noisy and fail prematurely.

So tell me the problem, also tell me how much load is to mush for a bearing, cause I have seen suzuki's tightened to this Suzuki approved method go over 270k on the original pump....my ole Gv being on of em..

the way i fixed mine is stated the car let it idle and held a plain candle to each side of the belt until the squeal went away, has fixed the problem for a year so far
