This is my theory...

In front of the windscreen there is a grate/vent in the scuttle panel. Under that is a big plastic 'box' which has a convoluted air path. Basically it lets the air through to the heater core without the water. The water should collect in a little sump on each side where it then drains out into the engine bay (you should be able to see the little rubber 90 degree elbows coming out of the firewall each side of the transmission tunnel).

Now, what happens over time is that you get dirt and leaves that collect where the water and air is supposed to go, the water can't drain out of the little drains and ends up in your footwell. I am going to have a look at mine to see where this water is coming from, because I am having the same problem. Now, I have actually cleaned out that box a while back, and I was a bit suprised when I found water in the footwell. It's possible I have a leak somewhere else, in which case you may be having the same problem, which may be an easy fix. Otherwise I have my stupid airbox filled with crap again and have to pull the whole frickin dash out AGAIN.

I will let you know when I have a look at it, but if you know me you can be assured that it won't be in a hurry

dont forget as well soft tops have drains in the windscreen surround that are designed to drip on your feet fromt eh water that collects under the windscreen
