ive just rebuilt my motor on my vitara and its running like a treat but the self forming gasket is leaking significantly from halfway along the motor on each side, ill give it another go tomorrow night, any tips on having it not leak, cos its a major pain in the ass, though it looks like i can get it off by removing front diff (reckon thats easier then taking the motor out again

i redid the sump gasket on my sierra with engine in and diff in... vits might be different though

you should be able to get it off without taking anything out... just a bit of a pain to get the front bolts out...

RTV Black (Oil Resistant) Silicone of a Decent Brand, we use Wurth Stuff at work, whilst its a bit pricey you really do get what you pay for

make sure you give the surfaces a scraping with a razor and wipe with a pit of degreaser on a rag before you silicone..

when my old man showed me how to do gaskets (not sure if its right or not tho :p ) : I spread my silicone like butter, covering the whole surface evenly and i do the bolts up at an even rate all around.. not tight straight away but a little tighter each time i get back to it untill they are all tight..

Works for me every time

check that where the bolt holes are one of them isnt burred or sticking out to far maybe?

its all the same bolts i took out before the rebuild it didnt leak prior to the rebuild, but ill go over it all again and hopefully it wont leak this time

basically if you use a gasket i like to smear some sealant on it. jus a thin layer.
but if your not using a gasket then do a continuous bead around the sump (dont smear it or touch it) then jus bolt it up evenly.
the sump to the diff is tight will prolly have to drop it down a bit id say.

you can get a cork sump gasket from Ripco. use a razor blade to clean it up and clean and dry both of the metal surfaces with a solvent free brake cleaner. spread the gasket go on the surfaces with your finger. make sure you torque the blots in a even pattern and do not over tighten them pass the recommended torque. plus do not put any oil in for at least an hour

.... otherwise maybe it is something from the rebuild causing the sump to over pressurize. Is there excessive pressure coming out of the oil filer cap?

how did you use the goop? can make a big difference if you wack it straight on and bolt up, or let it half cure and go all tacky and then bolt it up.

Read the pack cause different brands do different things.

I've seen that one greg, green/blue tintop with a fair bit of lift & 30's... Jester's is a red like this one...

since that photo was from the previous owners, I spose i really should take some photos of it, its just spent so much time being fixed since ive had it, and dont have a decent camera and when ive pinched the time to work on it documenting it has been the last thing on my mind.

But yeah that pic is Rojo but the obvious changes are, 2in body lift fitted, bumpers raised to match, has AT tyres on it (just same as i bought it with), rear bullbar thing removed (was bent anyway), fastback top fitted, spotties fitted into the front bar, reversing spotties fitted to rear bar.

things done that arent so obvious in that pic, full engine rebuild (had done head when i first bought it hindsight should have done the whole thing then), converted to manual (full rebuild on box carried out, LWB front disks and calipers fitted (extended lines done, and rebuilt master cylinder), red checkerplate door trims, recoloured dash to black from baby-poo brown, fitted LOUD alarm system and immobiliser.


things still to do fit poly front bushes, strut-top flip, fit sports seats, sort out wiring issues so the spotties front and rear are actually there for more then looks, also so that i have reversing lights again, probably should get the speedo made accurate.


ive only owned it for about 2 years, though its only been on the road for less then 12 months of that.

ok leak should be fixed now, i think you must be dreaming though stocker at getting the sump out with the front diff in place, but its only a 15 min job to get out
