Today I was driving in 4wd along some tracks that had loose gravel, mud and where quite slippery and when coming back to the main road I stopped, went to neutral, clutch in and changed back to 2wd but when it did change there was a loud clunk which you could feel the car move slightly. I drove back along the track and tried again and it did it again. When changing straight from 2wd to 4wd and then back again when stationary it was fine but when I drove in 4wd and then changed back it clunked.
Any ideas?

ps. When I got home (50kms from where I was) I went down a muddy track and tried again and it changed smooth this time.

were you completey stop for a couple of seconds before you shifted into 2wd

neutral and clutch in doesnt relieve the wind up between the front and rear diffs. did you disengage 4wd before or after you got onto tarmac?

that's part of it, can I take a punt at it being push button??
It's quite common for them to clunk in & out of gear, as a servo doesn't have the feel of whether the gear is selecting or not, so it hold pressure on the selector till it's changed...

Thanks for that Steak_knife, she's the push button model. Yes, was still on the gravel road when changing and as stated this track had gravel, and slippery clay areas so there should not have been any wind up. ZOOK95 - I was completely stopped when changing but going from 4wd to 2wd should not affect that according to the manual it is only when you are in 4wdLow that you are suppose to stop. (Correct me if I am wrong)
