Why not just pull it apart and give it a clean? Its really not too hard to do.

I cleaned all the contacts before I put it in. the sticking goes on in the area behind where all the moving parts are doesn't it? you cant get to that.

Wa? You can take the solenoid of with 2 screwed and pull it down to clean it. Then you can work the bendix shaft of the starter by hand and lube it so it works freely.

Most palces jsut import whole new starters these days cause its not worth rebuilding them anymore, so parts are hard to come buy

youve still got the starter relay one? are your main battery leads for earth and power tight with nice solid clean connections? it might be worth pulling them off and sanding underneath them as well, sometimes it can take the smallest thing to cause problems

Ive got the clicky starter fix going and ya I cleaned and lubed everything when I took the last solenoid off.

it starts sometimes and when it does not it starts with a hammer easily. I know all the connections are good, I double checked them when I put the second solenoid in. I was sort of after solving the issue by positively not having a sticky solenoid but I'm not to keen to fork out for a new starter when I don't really need one.

Had the same issue with my 93 Sierra got sick of getting out tapping it with the tyre iron so just ordered a new one from auto barn. $180 brand new straight out of the Holden Cruze works absolute treat. $$, some would say yes, piece of mind and stuffing around with the solenoids etc I thought was worth every penny.

Other than that the old take it apart etc. I have the full service book that outlines etc how to take the Sierra apart and clean it out etc and whilst I haven't tried myself did look pretty easy.

where are you hitting it with a hammer? the solenoid or starter motor itself?

the solenoid, just a tap while holding the ignition on. starts every time

It was a working unit when pulled. I wonder if there is another issue here. Maybe if the motor itself has an issue??

thats what I was thinking but with the clicky starter fix I know power is running directly to it. and it always starts up when I give it a tap. the old one never worked with out a hammer, the one I just put in works about 50% of the time. what if I just rigged up a device that gave the solenoid a tap that I could pull inside the cabin. a bit of string through the fire wall attached to a ball bearing on a rubber band or something.
I'll pull the starter motor again on friday and have another look. how complex are they on the inside? it I open it up is shit going to go everywhere so I cant get it back together?

Ive only pulled the G16B slim body ones apart. But if you lay the insides out as you pull it apart it shouldnt be too hard. Carefull for the ball bearings on the ends of the armature..

righto, there was a fair bit of oil on mine. if I clean it out what should I lube it with? clean it all out with wd40 and does it need anything going back together?

I just cleaned all the mud and sand out with wd40.. HTB grease on the ends of the armature. I used PTFE on the arm from the solinoid but this will probally just wash off with water over time... Brushes were given a very light sand.. Cant remember what else i did.

righto so I cracked open the starter motor and there was more mud in there than on a dirt track! cleaned it all out gave everything a quick sanding and hit it all with wd40. got it all back in and it started without any troubles four times. we'll see how it goes in the morning but I'm pretty happy its sorted.. hopefully. thanks to everyone who posted up to help!
