I pulled my case apart the other day, but the countershaft was stuck. I removed the locking tab on the outside of the case but the shaft won't budge.
Any trick on getting it out?

If that doesn't work, hit it harder!

lol was meant as a silly, but instead of smacking the shit out of it with a light hammer, let inertia do the job, use a bigger hammer, swung with good force, much more inertia.

Always use a brass drift, never steel on steel.

I find that swearing at it and graphically describing sexual acts I would do to its mother helps things along.

Why does the counter shaft protrude through the case, thus needing an 'O' ring? Is there a maintenance reason for this?
