ive had a search, but come up with diddly squat, and everything online is in regards to FWD's where the cables have buggered up.
long story short, selling my unlicenced vit, fella came over to test drive it, brings it back, and the tranny (manual) wont engage 1st, 3rd or 5th.
engages 2nd, 4th and reverse fine, and drives fine in those gears.
its somewhat similar to the feeling of my old sierra when the shifter sheet arsed out and the transfer case just wouldnt engage the gear.
ive pulled the shifter out, and tried to slot the gearbox into one of the gears with a screwdriver, and again, engages 2nd 4th and rev, but not 1st 3rd or 5th.
slightly more than mega poop.

did you have problems with it crunching into any gears either high revs or going down gears?
i had a corolla with a 2nd gear syncro problem for ages. then one day it wont go into 1st 2nd or 5th. the mechanic i asked about it says it will be the syncro has fallen into the gears and jammed them up
dunno but

when you were attempting to engage the gears was the vehicle running and the clutch pushed in, or is that with it Off. My mum's Liana had the same problem, (i realise its a completly diff motor and box etc. but try reversing it down the street for 40 or 50 meters at a bit of speed and see if it will engage the gears. don't know what it did, but it fixed the liana

First, third & fifth requires you to slide three different shift rods backwards, second, third & reverse requires you to slide the same three shift rods forwards - the only thing common is the shift lever - I'm going to guess you have a problem in the shift extension, and it's most likely something behind the shift rods preventing them from moving backwards.

thats waht i was thinking, thing is, front wheel drives have all manner of mechanisms, rods, connections, and cables, and its all external, so i can understand if something gums it up.
the fact that its a rwd type box means its most likely something terminal inside the gearbox casing.
