Hey people!

I just wanted to ask you knowledgeable folk out there about my 2002 GV.

I took it for its 90,000 km service today & all seems cool. However quite coincedentally, just when it needed this service, about a month ago it started playing up on me, so I waited until the service to get it looked at.

The particular problem I'm having, is the car starts fine in the morning (when the engine is cold) but I have a problem with it starting when the engine is warm. So for example, I drive down to the petrol station which is 5 minutes away, fill up & then when I go to leave, it won't start up again. I have to try 4 or 5 times, it just keeps stalling on me. Sometimes I wait about 20 minutes until the engine cools down & it'll start up fine. If I happen to stall it on a hill (as it's a manual) again same problem.

So like I said, today I got it serviced for its 90,000 kms, plus I mentioned the additional problem to the Suzuki technician/mechanic. What they did in addition to the service was the following.

Upper engine clean.
Removed & cleaned throttle body.
Cleaned idle air control valve & reinstalled it back.
Conducted base idle setup.

Now he also mentioned that I need a new battery & unless I get that replaced the problem will continue, which in fact it has. Went to fill up this afternoon & car wouldn't start. After trying about 5 or 6 times, it started & I drove home OK.

Technician did say that once I get a new battery, the car will start no problems. I just want to know that whether it really is as simple as changing the battery, or something else more sinister going on.

My husband thinks it has nothing to do with the battery, so I thought I'd ask here. We could & will change the battery, but he's stressed that it's something else.

Any ideas?

Oh & how does oil leak into the rocker cover? Could it happen if too much oil was put in, cause I topped up about 2 months ago & I "may" have put too much oil in....Would that cause it?

Thanks Royce!

I am just editing this, the car does start up for a few seconds, so it's kicking over, but then just stalls. I have to really rev the engine & put it in first & accelerate really quickly to get it going, once it gets going it's fine, very annoying!

it depends on what you call not starting, if it winds over fine but just wont dire its a safe bet its not the battery, if it doesnt wind over it could be the battery

you say it stalls so I assume it winds over and fires but wont stay running? I would be looking for air leaks (hey Damo) or a dodgy idle control solenoid thingy, could also be a suss fuel pump but youd really want to be sure of the problem before jsut throwin expensive parts at it

my mate had a similar problem, not in a GV though

turned out in the june floods we had last year his box for his immobiliser got cracked (from the sudden heat changes me thinks) and as it would heat up the internals would expand and loose connection. let it cool down the metal would return to size and presto is starts again.

simple fix if that turned out to be the problem
