i've been reading a few things about turbo setups in sierras and was wondering if anyone has run a turbo on a g13ba?
what would be a good simple set up?
i was thinking about a blow through carby set up just something simple that'll give me a bit of extra power
i know i would most likely be better off getting an efi vitara motor or even a gti motor but i wouldn't mind something a bit different and i've heard a few interesting stories about turbo sierras

Cheers

5 psi would be ok more than likely... Someone had a bobcat turbo on their Sierra I recall...

I had a T2 from an exa on mine, I didnt fit it or set it up but it was shitter than shit, soon as you got any boost it would jsut miss and stop.
you either need to go to an SU or something draw through with the right turbo or mod your weber for boost

Just use a TBI setup. Carbies are a pain to setup with turbo's...... in fact, carbies are just a pain full stop!!!!!! Particularly when they don't idle :rambo:

i don't want to run heaps of boost but i want something that will make a noticable difference i've seen a fair few old turbo setups that use webers and they seem to work pretty well

don't know about the b engines but the a engines have a oil feed next to the oil pres.

i'm looking at running a webber on mine as well but it will be a month away before i even look at the carby. would like to know how webers go as a blow thru set up, does any one know if they need to be boost refenced or can be just o ringed on the throttle shafts?

DONT GO OVER 8 PSI, the std pistions break the top pistion groves where the 1st ring sits.

it gives a good power up for the money you spend, don't even have to regraph the dizzy just have to put a one way valve on the vac advance so you don't force air up the vac line when on boost. it's not hard to tune as your not putting much more air in it.

i thought it was the b block that was made to run a turbo
i'm pretty sure i've seen a couple draw though setups using 40mm DCOE webers on vdub engines but i'm not sure what a DGAV would be like
i was thinking of maybe running 6-7psi
what sort of turbo would work the best?

a small turbo, smaller the better. last one was off a 2.8 diesel rodeo, next one is off a sr20 engine but i think it will have heaps of lag. i'm only using is as i have it in the shed. if its no gooid i'll be looking for a ct20 or a charade turbo.

i'll have to see how yours goes and if its alright i'll get the same stuff
i have no idea what makes a good turbo
what sort of weber are you planning on using?

i was just going to use a std 1.6 or 2l escort carby and re build it down the track it it has problems. don't know the model number but the 2ltr car has the right air flow on paper. they have a water cotroled choke and are cheap as. a mate used to have a pretty nuts escort with a std carby and he did his own carby work so i'll pick his brains when i'm up to that. just have to get the engine and turbo mounted up then i'll be on to the carby.

mine came off a an escort its a 32/36 DGAV but i've got an auto choke (it was cheaper and easier to get the auto choke than replacing the corroded water choke housing)
when you come to mounting the turbo be sure you post pics so i can steal your ideas

turbos are easy to mount, just need a manifold to mount up 2 and a bit of a brace if i can be stuffed. i'll post pics up in my build up when the engine is in.

auto choke is the carby i was talking about. just sent a email off about these carbys as a blow thru set up so i'll let you know what i get told.

are you gonna make your own manifold?
there was a a turbo setup on ebay the other day for a sierra that used a 32/36 and a turbo off a subaru but it sold off ebay

The g13b isn't "made to run a turbo" as such, but it does have a more durable drank and rods that would handle the extra cylinder pressure better than those of the ba model. I'm guessing you will need to drop your static compression a little though.

I'd be a bit leery about using a turbo from a diesel engine. I'm sure it would pick up boost really quickly, but that 2.8 diesel wouldn't rev over 5000RPM, but when your zook does, that turbo would surely be waaaay out of it's efficiency range. I'd be looking for a factory 1.3 turbo engine and trying a turbo off one of those. Toyota (shut up Royce) 4EFTE out of the GT Starlet is a 1.3 turbo, I think the turbo is a CT9. They should be pretty easy/cheap to get a hold of.

I am biased against carbies, so i won't start on that side of things

turbos don't work off the engine revs, they work off the air speed that is going thru them, angle of the vains on the exhaust wheel and the compressure on the front of the turbo. more air (exhaust gas) the faster it spins. less air ( to big turbo on small engine) the more lag but diesel turbos have diffenent angles on the vaines so they spool up quicker.

so a diesel turbo comes on boost before a petrol turbo of the same size so you can run them on smaller engines and will keep on boost while the engine is reving. last one would come on boost about 1500-2000 rpm and pull to about 6500-7000 before running out of puff and i don't know if it was no fuel or the turbo running out.

i was going to do a 4ag conversion in mine but drove one with one and wasn't happy with where the power or the cost came on compaired to how the last car drove.

with the right turbo its the best bang for your buck imo. just don't get gready for power and you will be fine.

i run a twincam with a t25 ball bearing but as people say run efi its easier or try a subaru super charger maybe with a drawthrough

I didn't say it won't work, just that it will be ineffiecient at high revs. It'd be interesting to see the compressor map of that turbo, you'd have to be getting close to the surge threshold.

true but it wasn't for all out power, was to make the car more driveable and it did that very well. made the engine have plenty of toque down low so all the 4wding was done under 4000 rpm.

i only ever had to rev it if i was casing down a ricer :)

just got a email back from a guy about running the weber as a blow thru carby, they will take up ( if its in good condition) to 10 psi of boost with a boost refenced fuel reg and pump that will pump enough fuel. nothing has to be done to the carby.

thats good news for me and mike :D my set up will just be a vl pump abd boost ref reg then weber. i might us the std pump as a pick up pump and have a little surge tank in the engine bay vl pump after that to the carby then use the std line to run the extra fuel back to the tank.

yes that is good news should be fine for 7psi then now i just have to work out what turbo and getting someone to make up a manifold
