News everybody!

i got stuck into the hubs last night and today and found that the only dramas from the work done by the last mechanic was the knuckle seal splits were at 6oclock instead of 12, and of course he put 2 shims on the bottom kingpin instead of one top/bottom.

Everything looked like new in there, fresh grease, no water, and generally looking good. so my spirits dropped somewhat (i was hoping to find something obvious)

i changed the kingpin bearings and the main wheel bearings as per the instructions off bigjimny, too easy. 2nd was much faster than 1st as usual.

i used a digital force guage from work to check the resistance in the knuckles, wasnt quite 4.5kg, more like 3.9ish and that was with .5mm on both top and bottom kingpins, so there you go, i still have a little to play with.

also changed all 4 tie rod ends, so im going to need another wheel align (yay). the old ones had no play in them but didnt look exactly brand new or anything.

put it all back together.......... NO MORE DEATH WOBBLE AND NO MORE SHIMMY!!!!

i still have to change the drivers side wheel bearing as i dont have easy access to a press, but after doing the job its pretty easy to get to that stage (around 20mins).

So it goes to show, even a knuckle and bearing that look brand new can obviously be shagged. i remembered to check the 2nd knuckle for drag resistance and it varied significantly depending where it was in the turn, after shimming and new bearings it was smooth across the range. keep that in mind when you check.

anyway im rambling, beer time im very happy.
