Hey all,

Today I noticed that my 5 speed is leaking rather badly from the rear, and possible front too.

Is is possible to replace these seals with the box in situ, or does it require removal?

Also, does anyone have a spare for sale?

It is from a 92 sierra.

rear can be done in car. for the front it would have to come out.

if the front is the gearbox youll need to pull the box apart too, more than likely its the rear main on the engine

or your breather could be blocked too

What does a rebuild usually cost?

piece of string, I think a parts kit it about $400 assuming all your hard parts inside are OK

Makes a second hand one with 6 month warranty look pretty good...

if you have 1.5 leaks it makes an hours work and $5 for a seal seem pretty good

Are they easy to replace? I have only ever done a gearbox on my old sunny wagon, it was a PITA (mainly my fault however).

the rear seal is no harder than a wheel bearing seal, take the jack shaft out and lever the old seal out and refit the new one

replacing the whole gearbox is fiddly cause the hol is barely big enough but would be similar to doing a sunny box
