my air filter looks like new and it is at least 60000km old with most of that being either
in the bush or on dirt roads.
in my opinion nothing is better on the intake side of ya motor then the factory airbox
with a snorkel and a Donaldson precleaner.

This.

My Peugeot 505 has one factory fitted under the bonnet(it's the sports model too! ) and an air filter the size of a trucks. 600'000kms and it's never had the head off(and they all get stupid high kms, mine's not an excaption), I can't help but thinking these have a leading role.

Oil baths are the ducks nuts too. The African (and it's fuckin dusty there) RWD Peugeot guys reckon carby model 505s or 504s with a normal paper filter (which is freaking substantial) is good for about 600'000-700'000kms where as oil bath ones with pull 800'000-900'000kms.

I've got a few spare oil baths for my 403, I'm considering adapting one to my LJ, it'd be a pain to fit with the side draft carby though.

When I put a snorkel on my LJ it'l have a pre cleaner for sure.

BTW, thanks for the link to the Trolley tug thread, just the inspiration I needed to get out there and work on my LJ tomorrow. :D I've probably read that thread (and piggles) half a dozen times. Gwagen, if there's any other builds you could share with us, it would be highly appreciated!

Turns out I didn't take any photos of the completed air filter setup on the tug. I'll snap some today.

In your avatar, Your snorkel isnt air and water tight.

Light water in air is no problem to motors. Its the solid flow of water thats the problem.

Finally someone agrees with me. I'v been trying to explain to a mate of mine that rain down the snorkel isn't going to affect the motor unless it's some kind of torrential monsoon. I'm finding a lo tof dust is still being collected by my snorkel, I'll be needing a pre-clear I think or my filters ain't going to last very long.

I was hosing the windscreen on one of my snorkled cars once (which was idling at the time) and I was surprised how much the very fine mist from a hose around the front of the snorkle made the engine idle go up. If you have a snorkle try it, park your car with the engine idleing and spray a very fine mist the engine loves the moist, cool dense air.

Even in heavy rain with a snorkel, The water will sit in the bottom of the airbox.

If if droplets do get past everything else, It will evaporate as soon as it gets close to the head from the heat.

Solid flow of water that hydraulic locks the motor is the problem.

All those motors that overheat from a blown head gasket. Where does the water go..Into the oil or into the a cylinder, It is then spat out the exhaust. I have had green coolant on my hand from a Ford Laser exhaust. -not joking- Major gasket leak

Thanks Steve. Can you get a shot of the seal too?

Hmm, well "today" didn't turn out to be "today".... but it is "today" if you are following :D

Here's some shots of the setup on the tug.

Yes, I know, we haven't installed the ducting between the filter and the seal adapter which we should have done before Michael was doing this:

Which is why it's all very muddy. (The inner guards are open at the guard edge so lots of mud gets thrown around)

Note: the cutout in the bonnet was from the previous setup, where the donaldson had to be removed before the bonnet could be opened.

It's not at all intrusive from inside the cab.

Even with the big dumb rivets sitting around the seal (and I do know that could have been handled better) it still looks like it's been quite effective.

The vertical tube with the rubber on the top is 4.5" exhaust tube. It has an angled "floor" with a rubber drain with flaps to let out water. If the donaldson was swamped, there's quite a few hundred ml of capacity before any water can wash into the filter housing.
