I am in the same boat with my 1.6 vit motor, what are you going to do about the stock internals? Im not sure if it will handle boost for long.
Yes I appreciate that and here's what I've come up with
One of two options
1 the vit sohc has a relatively low compression ratio. Which makes it "more readily" to take a turbo. One thing that would definitely need to be looked at and not Overlooked is the head gasket.
The oem gasket won't take the added pressure for long. So you would need to get a custom metal head gasket made up. They don't make an off the shelf item. Last time I priced one I was looking at about 300 bucks to make one up.
As for hardware pistons, bearings etc...
I can't see a whole lot of problems running low boost so long as your motor isn't too tired. And has decent compression. As we are all well aware, The Motor is only as strong as the Tune that you give it.
Of course if you take it to Shonky Brothers Dyno Tuning they may get your car running with the added boost, but might not take into account that we actually drive cars on the road... not on Rollers.
I Am of the opinion that Running 6-8 PSI. The Stock internals of the motor will hold up. So long as you Include some mechanical sympathy like Rev Limiters and what not. Running 6-8PSI with the turbo i will be using TD04 should give me full boost around 2500RPM. Therefore my rev limiter will be set around 5750 RPM.
You can definitely go down the road of Building a Stronger motor, ie: Pistons, Rod's, cranks, getting it all balanced and put together and what not, but as with everything its expensive.
I have seen mention of people using Cranks and rods out of VTEC 1.6L's but I really haven't looked into it... sounds like an expensive route.
Option two - twin cam head from a gti.
This option is considered better for turbo applications as by fitting this head it also lowers the compression ratio which again makes for easier turbo applications.
But there's alot of custom work involved with this...
So whichever way you choose to do it or if you do it another way. There is more work in planning and preparation. Don't forget the healthy budget.
And your thriftyness spend yOur budget wisely... You don't need to spend 2 grand on a Garrett turbo. Spend it on a better ecu ( just like you don't need the latest haltech if the cheaper and reliable adaptronic will do the job)
... Did I mention it has a launch control function
