hi again mates. just been thinking about when i changed my broken cv in my wt sierra. when i checked to see if i could pull it out it came out even with the kignpin bits in. any ideas? and i pushed it back in with kingpins in also and continued to put it back together

been thinkn.... this shouldnt happen right?

generally speaking you dont remove the kingpins or swivel hub to replace a stock CV

The kingpins are the pivot for the swivel hub, the stock cv's fit through the hole in the hub, from what I've heard this is not the case for chromo's and you would need to remove the swivel hub to replace one.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The other reason for putting the cv in before putting the swivel hub back on is that you can get more room at the end so when you're trying to support the axle to get it back into the diff you have less trouble doing it.

Pulling the kingpins do change CV's is a huge PITA. - 5 10mm bolts, pull the cir clip, 10 fiddly greasy little 10mm bolts, messing with seal plates, pull the kingpins and drop them in the dirt, mix up the preload shims so you get death wobble - meh.

Next time you do the wheel bearings, pull the backing plates, then a 14mm ratchet spanner will fit between the hub and the spindle bolts.

6 hub cover bolts, 2 calliper bolts, 4 spindle bolts - CV out. Takes a few minutes, even in the bush.

Of course, if you have double toughs, you don't need to pull the CV's in the first place.

Is there a good way to set up the preload shims, I have a vibration in the front right of my zook, when I got the housing it had nothing on the swivel on that side so all my old stuff went straight on

bit of a hijack.
my cvs wont come out without me taking off the whole hub off does this mean i already had chromos i didnt know about? or am i just be silly, is there any way to tell if you have chromos?

Take the kingpins out, pull one and compare it to these photos.

All chromo CV's come from the same source, so they all look like this:



They are smooth, might be almost chrome smooth (although for a while there they were finished black, and the largest part has a circular shape to it.

All stock sierra CV's look like the top one in this photo.



The bottom one in the picture is a stock one that's had a Birfield ring installed, which is possible, and probably won't fit though the knuckle either.

If you are keen you can pull an axle right out and count the splines at the diff end - 22 spline - stock - 26 spline - Chromo.

They can be a bit fiddly to get out though. My guess is it's technique rather than Chromos that's stopping you getting them out, although it's worth hoping you have secret chromo's installed

i pulled out my cv today and had to undo the knuckle thing....wouldnt come out the knuckle..... And they wernt chromo's....there the same as the top one in the picture....

They sometimes get stuck. Put a bolt though a link of chain and screw into the thread on the enf of the stub axle/CV. Use as a slide hammer.

I have never had any trouble pulling an undamaged CV in almost twenty years of pulling suzuki CV's.

If they are broken (even a little bit) they can be a PITA

Just yesterday. 11EVL came over to get a housing. It still had CV's in it. We had to use a screw driver behind the birf to lever it out of the ball.

Knuckles were completely removed. My guess was that the CV/ front centre had hardly been used......ie no wear.

hi again guys. ive actually got a spare shim from mine left over from when i pulled it apart. i thought they were just gaskets. lol

so i have one in the top one and one in the bottom but now i know there spacers. would the extra one have been in the top or bottom one do yas think? if there all the .5 mm ones. not sure if they are but

havent driven it yet so dunno about any new wobbles. shud i try it and not worry about it if its all good still? hoping it was maybe due for a shim removal anyway or will be ok with the new tolerances
