Gents. I've got a 97 lwb vitara and it's been losing gearbox oil out of a thin hairline fracture in the gearbox housing. Now aside from getting a recon box is their any product i can buy to seal the crack or should i get a welder to it. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks Ray

Drain box and have it welded. This is not the place for the ole Epoxy Knead It.

When under there also check all GB mounts are up to scratch.

If only it were that easy.

The most effective approach to welding cast ally ( and ally in general) is to clean the absolute bejesus out of it before welding.

Trying to weld up a crack that has gearbox oil in it will be ugly. So the best approach would be to completely strip the box and acid wash the offending casting.

A) Are you 100% sure it has a crack that's leaking? I'm sure it's possible, but it wouldn't be the first time someone thought a leak that was coming from elsewhere looked like it was coming from a casting mark.


B) How did the crack develop? It's far from common.

C) Vitara manual boxes are cheap and plentiful. I vote to swap the whole box. Welding will be a pain.
