Hey guys i have a 1985 holden drover and i have just bought a sony xplode stereo and speakers. The previous owner of the car had butched the wireing and left it in a big mess i have done my best to try and clean it up but he has cut all the stereo wireing out. after searching under the dash i found a wire fot the constant power and anouther white and black wire that has power to it when the car is on. so i have wired the stereo in useing these wire's.

Any way the problem is when i turn the car on the stereo lights up and shows the time and i can acecss the settings menu and change the settings but when i try to go into the tunner or cd player the screen gose black and lights flash but it won't work.

after cheaking over the wireing many times i thought it might have been the stereo so i brought it back to the store and exchanged it for another but im still haveing the same problem.

I reckon teh problem might be your description

check your wiring again, I reckon either one of your power or earths is crap or a speaker wire is shorting

checked all wireing even cut it all off and re soldered it all. im getting 11.5 volt to both the power wires and it has a good strong earth.
But still no go.

how did you check the wiring? do you know what you are checking?

You will have a constant power for memory that will always be fed to the unit, then you need an pickup for ignition power on, maybe you have the two mixed up? I just did my missus Astra wiring a mono and a 2channel amp with a new deck. The wiring was all twitched together and I just pulled most of it out and started fresh, that way you know it's done right.

yer mate i know. my bat is shit and only reads 12.3v . after talking to the guy at the store he said that it should still work.

start it and give it some revs to see if it improves, though that much drop on a meter shows you might have other problems

check your speaker wires arent shorted first

12.3v will defiantly be enough, the ignition power for the deck should be the one to keep the light and setting on when the key is clicked over, just double check that you have it set right, where are you earthing to?

Yeah as Royce said, hell I'd disconnect them and see if it works first. Start with the power to the deck then work to the speakers.

when the car is started it reads 14 volt but makes no diff. ill got pull the speakers and double check theres no shorting

If you only have 11.5V at your stereo, but 12.3 at the battery than that 0.8V voltage drop IS the problem. Voltage drop in that wiring with no load should be less than 0.05V!

Personally, I would run a new fused wire back from the battery to a relay and wire the relay coil into the white/black (accessories power) wire.

Tap into the new wire before the relay for your constant power, and after the relay for your switched connection. Don't use any existing earth connection under the dash but make a new one - there are many places to earth a new ring terminal under there. Problem solved!

I'm not getting into the voltage drop issues as I is not smarts enough for dat shiz but to install the stereo, The best and probably the only way is to check things with a test light. Earth the test light and with the ignition on probe the wires until it lights up, If it lights up with the ingition off you've found your main power wire. If it turns off when the ignition is off, you've found the remote / memory wire. As for earth, put an eyelet crimp and weld it in place on the stereo wiring harness and screw it down to bare metal.

Then your speaker wires.

If you can't probe the wires because of the plastic coating on the wires, Instead of stripping all the wires use a pin to peirce the plastic and probe that with the lest light.

Piss easy.

i have just checked for shorts in the speakers and come out with nothing. i tryed changeing the earth and still nothing. it gets power to run the memory fine but its playing up as if it's not getting any power from the ignition. so i think ill try running another wire from the ignition. the white and black wire im useing at the moment reads 12.4 volt but still dosent work.

hook the negative from your meter to teh radios case

prob the battery power wire into teh unit, with it on and playing up and see if the voltage stays consistent, then try with the acc power wire

then disconnect all the speaker wires at the unit and see if it still flashes

i have tryed disconecting all the speaker wires and it still flashes so it has now come down to the two power wires.

Try running new power wires. When I installed a tuner in my old troopy I replaced everything to make sure it worked as the guy before had made a big mess of wires. Try testing the unit straight off the battery.

do you have the am/fm antenna plugged in?

my Panasonic car stereo in my tourer wont turn on unless there is an Antenna connected.

I'd run just wire it temporally, direct to the battery (join battery and ign wires together on the stereo), if it doesn't work take it back where you got it.

if it does work you have a wiring issue in the truck .

Here's a noob-cad...

Follow the diagram - that symbol that look like a upside-down triange is earth. Don't forget to tie relay -ve and stereo to a decent earth and you will have no more power dramas.

Sierras (even ones with unbutchered looms) seem to have a lot of voltage drop on the accessories +ve feed - may be due to worn contacts in ignition switch, a couple of connectors, or what appears to be 0.5mm^2 wiring!

Good,i was going to say that some Sony sets have 2 earths(or is it power leads?) and when you get away from the standard plug it can get tricky.
