Tech Question -
I dont know if all GV's have the thermo fan come on when the Air Con is turned on, but i didnt notice if it was, until i saw a couple of other GV's, with the A/C on, and the thermo fan was definitely on... i have never heard my thermo fan come on, even when the A/C is on, the A/C seems to work fine anyway, but if it is supposed to come on when the AC is on, is there any things i can check and and where are they, in case it just a relay or even a fuse ?

General Query -
My mother has been comparing/bragging how much faster her Auto 03 GV is, compared to my Man 01 GV, from a standing start... and yes my 70 year old mother loves the power of the V6 GV, and loves leaving people at the lights, haha... well, i got to drive her auto GV for a couple of hours, and i must say i disagree, first gear in the auto is good, but when its in 2nd and 3rd, i find it much slower, and lacks grunt... i dont take off from the lights like a bat out of hell, with my mother in the car, i drive fairly sedately, but if i did take off quickly, i think she might be surprised... anyway, just wondering what others think of the auto gear ratio's, and if they think they are quick/quicker than a Man GV ?

If by "thermo fan" you mean the electric fan mounted in front of the condenser (the a/c condenser fan), then yes it should come on when the a/c is on and cycle on & off with the a/c compressor.

The a/c will cool without the condenser fan once there is adequate airflow through the condenser/radiator sandwich, so a non functional condenser fan may go unnoticed, especially if the vehicle is not left stationary with the a/c running for extended periods - with a moving vehicle the forward motion forces air through the condenser/radiator and on a stationary vehicle the heat load from the condenser increases the air temps into the viscous clutch fan resulting in an increased air flow.

The condenser fan is controlled by the ECU via a relay and is separately fused - the ECU will also turn it on if it detects a coolant overtemp condition (and disable the a/c compressor) - the fans have a tendency to "bind" as the bearings dry out and then the fuse clears because of the increased current draw.

I have only driven my auto GV but understand what u mean when it hits second gear it feels like the hand brake is ripped on. I just leave the power button on so it revs a little further in each gear to keep it in the torque range and is fine.

Yes should come on when you turn the ac on.

If your manual doesnt beat your mums in a drag there is something wrong, ofcourse it'll seem and be slower the auto doesnt hold the gear long enough like you can in a manual.

I can tell you though, i absolutely smashed a jeep in a 2wd beach drag. And he beat a patrol, and silver princess earlier in the day when they were further up the beach.

Also, dont be scared to really sink the boot in in the auto. it probably seems like it won't but it does go up over 5 grand

Yep, the electric fan in front of the condenser... ok will check the fan hasnt frozen up, and check the fuses, do you know were the relay for the fan is ?

Yeah exactly, it feels like 2nd gear is to high in ratio, and really struggles to get going...

Oh I know my manual will beat her auto, haha, i have never pushed my GV with my mum in it...

my mother went shoppin in her GV early this morning, and has been bragging about this Camry who wanted to drag from the lights, and she beat it, haha...

On a RHD '01 it should be under the hood on the right side near to the fuses - should be the one all the way to the front of the group.

When you say " right side ", is that looking from the front ?
If so, that would be passenger side...
