hey guys i have been pondering on the decision for quite some time now. the time has come for me to finally up grade my jimny and started modding the little green lady. for a start i know im going at least three inch lift (jimny bits) custom front and rear bar. sliders. possibly roof sliders. laminated diffs. sierra transfer and hubs. i basically wanna build a super capable camping/hunting daily driving toy. im leaning towards 31s because there a bit bigger and tougher looking.

anyway i will appreciate anyones toughts on the subject. are 31s over kill?

If you want "super capable" in vic shoot for 7.50 16's or 34X9's. Either will be easier to fit than 31's because the narrower profile means they can tuck into the guards better, and they will bother offer better bite and drivability in victorian terrain.

31's are far from overkill if you are looking for capability.

X2 I found my jim just as capable on 235's compared to 31's cus of the narrower width of the 235's. The 235's offered better bite of loose surfaces because there was more ground pressure, where as the 31x10.5's have less ground pressure. I do like the extra diff clearance from the 31's though, and that's why i sticking with them until there stuffed. But then again i do find the 31's better on high traction surfaces, but i think that has more to do with tyre compound etc... My next tyres with either be 31x9.5 or 32x9.5 (This is based on WA conditions )

are super swampers the only tires you can get in 34/9.5 ? i would like a set of radials. i wanna keep my fuel ecconomy as good as possible as the car is my daily. i also dont wanna attract to much attention from the .50 maybe 31/10 on 8s.

I like skinny tyres too, 31x10.5 imo are too wide for a sierra or jimny. I have 31x10.5s because I was planning a touring trip and wanted an alround tyre.

Even 6.5r16
205r16 are about 30.5"
235/85R16 near 32"
205R16 about 30.5"
650R16
Max width would be 9.5"

If you dont want too crazy, 205r16 would be alright.

The issue is finding the tread pattern you want, in the size you want. This is difficult as most offroad tyres are larger.

i already have a set of procomp 15/8 rims so i sorta wanna keep them.

I ran 2 psi in my 31x10.5s the other day on 8" rims, yes it did look like the tyre was about to fall off the rim, but it was ok.

Depends on the terrain, my 34x10.5 swampers are fine in the dry on 8" rims under 10psi but mud has a lovely way of working into the bead and causing leaks at those pressures. I would get 15x7's with custom offset if I was to buy new rims.

I have 15x8s on 235s, there far too wide, I have wheel spacers and 15x7s waiting to be cut and offset a touch more.

I can tell you that 235s and 37s are only a little different in performance, just the rolling diameter makes a bit of difference, but it wasn't anything amazing.....

Is the lt construction still ok for a zook. I would of thought they where a bit stiff?

31x10.5 work mint on 8 inch rims
never rolled 1 off yet running them on 7 psi almost evey trip
my sand tires are run on a 7 inch wide as i like to slide across dunes and go fast

If you get any real side loading, as in no weight on the wheels in one side of the car, on a 10.5 tyre with 8" rim it will fill the beads with shit and/or roll the tyre.

Where I am there's no real sand driving. More mud and rocks. If 8s are fine with bead locks I will bead lock em. I already have A set ready to weld on from my patrOl that I got laser cut

Welding a mechanical beadlock to a steel rim adds approximately 0.5" to the rim width. Honestly, for Victorian conditions, a 6" rim with a welded beadlock would be a better choice for a 10.5" tyre than an 8" rim with a welded beadlock.

You'll be bashing the rims into the ground constantly if you run low enough pressure to justify the beadlock.

Still committed to 31's though? You're leaving a LOT of capability on the table compared to a narrower tyre in Vic conditions.

It's not the height, it's the ratio of height to width.

Most 7.50's are barely taller than a 31, but have much squarer shoulders and a narrower tread and that improves drivability and traction.
