is there a way to tell difference between moded vitara g,box & sierra g,box...
i put the 1.6 carby motor in a while ago that came with g,box attached ( out of a 93 sierra) but i used my original sierra g,box.

wondering if the one it came with is a moded vitara g,box?
so far only diference i can see is there is no timing hole on the housing.
and the front half of the box looks newer than the back half (alloy stain)

if so are the vitara boxes a bit stronger than the 1.3 sierra box?

Is there an adapter plate between engine and gearbox? Did standard Sierra g'box mount line up? If so I would assume Sierra g'box

yeah it had the adapter plate, i left my original box in the car and bolter the new 1.6 and adapter straite on..
i noticed later my g,box mount was broken so i swaped it with the other one (bolted straite on)

do early w/t sierras have the timing hole on the bell housing?

Not sure mate, but I'm very confident that you have a Sierra box

You have both gearboxes there... Do they look the same?
I'd say they are both Sierra.

yep thats a sierra.
the vit box has transfer attached, however you can devorce it, but its easy to tell the diffrence.

The Vit box is physically larger and chunkier to look at, unlike a sierra box which has a jackshaft to the transfer the vit box has transfer bolted to it, when the transfer is removed from it there is a shaft that extends out the back and it is very obvious to look at that something needs tobe bolted on the back of it to finish it off..

I just searched for a while but could not find it, can anyone find the thread where (i think it was Joeblow) made a housing that bolted on the back of a Vitara gearbox so that it can be used ith a Sierra jackshaft and remote transfer.

autoss need the adapter for them. manual vit boxes can be divorced and use a sierra jack shaft without the adapter plate.

Hi Tanshi, I thought that on the manual and the auto it left a big void at the back and a shaft hanging in the air with no rear support, I am sure I saw someone made a plate that bolted up to the back to cover the void with a bearing in it to support the shaft, from memory I tought it was a Joeblow thread.

the one joe made was for an auto. the manual vit has less "overhang" of shaft past the last support bearing. the auto has too much over hang to work well so they add a support adapter.

if its an auto, you can buy supports for them from lowrange, but the manual doesnt need one.

That makes sense, it may have actually been that blue LJ of Ken's with a 4 speed vit auto
