jack car up and take out off gear and release handbrake.
undo the 4 17mm nuts in the middle off the hub and then give the tyre a good
wobble until the brake drum comes loose. brake drums can seize onto the axle.

Image
Image

then remove wheel and undo the bolts holding on the brake backing plate, remove
the hand brake cable and the brake lines. i am doing the drivers side on a w/t sierra so
there are two lines.
Image

when all the stuff is undone replace the brake drum back to front and give it a good flog with a
decent hammer, if that doesn't pop the axle out then put the brake drum back on propley and replace
the wheel. the idea is to put the wheel on so that there is a bit off movement and then get a bit rough
and try and leaver out the axle. lucky mine popped out easily which probably had something to do
with the big cracks in the outer bearing race.
Image

hmm don't know why my bearing was noisy
Image
remove the axle from the diff and get a grinder, hammer and some rags.
put a few nicks in the bearing
Image
put a rag over the bearing(bits will go everywhere) and give it a few good hits with a hammer.
remove the broken outer bearing race.
Image
pull the balls  and bearing cage out and you will be left with this.
Image
then you can slip the brakes off the axle and attack the rest off the bearing.
i stick a few nickes in the retainer and inner bearing cage and use a pin punch to knock
them off the axle.
Image
clean the axle up and run a file over any high spots. slip the brakes over the axle and put
the bearing on. the stickieoutie bit off the bearing faces the brakes. a couple off taps with
a hammer and punch will seat the bearing, just be careful not to stove in the side off the bearing.
Image
put the axle on something hard when flogging it with a hammer
Image
get a bit off heat into the retainer, i use a blow torch but an oven on flatout will do
Image
the retainer will still need to be flogged on and this bit really sucks and i think i will
buy a press before i do it again.
remove and replace the axle seal.
Image
slap a bit off glop on the housing, i don't know if it helps keep crap out but it couldn't hurt.
Image
then replace the axle, you will probby need to tap the axle home. then bolt the
brakes to the diff, connect the hand brake, bleed the brakes and stick the wheel back on.

agreed, i couldn't find my little grinder and a just thought fuck it and uped it with the big one.
in my defense that axle is almost a bin job anyway, the spline is almost nonexistent. but i dont want to put a good axle in until i have a manuel locker.

I always grind a few grooves round the inner race and retainer then flog it with a cold chisel to split it then slide it off (grinder helps heat it)

bit of 32nb Heavy chs is perfect size to hammer the bearing and retainer back on square too :)

i think joeblow was having a go at me because i nicked the axle with
the grinder not for actually using a grinder. it does look a bit rough however
i don't believe it would weaken the axle at all.

hay zookernator ya crazy Tasmanian i don't think auszookers has a search
button. if it does i have never used it any way.

You are also not supposed to heat the retaining ring. I has to be pressed on cold.

Even if the press was fixed, it wouldn't have been any help to you over the weekend 8)

The retainer should be hardened (case ?? can't remember). Maybe not to the same specs as a bearing but any wheel bearing kits I have ever fitted state not to heat the retainer for installation.

When you work out how much the -5 degrees in the freezer will shrink the axle it is almost non measurable. Using liquid nitrogen @ -196 degrees is much more effective.
