Hi all

i just had this roof rack made and i thought the silver would look good but now im thinking black would be better, the alloy looks porus so i was thinking a few cans of black spray paint would do the job? i have never painted alloy before so i was wondering what others had done to prep the alloy?

Hey Tim,

What happend to your basket?
I still need to get those extentions off you and we should hook up for some wheel'in.

I'm not sure about painting alloy, but if you use spray cans, use VHT Saturn Black. And do several very lite coats, this will give you a great finish. Oh and prime it with Kill rust Colgal primer.

Etch primer is the gear you want for aluminium.

so an etch primer!, will i need some of that then a coat of black paint after that??

and the VHT saturn black sounds good, i think i saw that at bunnings about a year ago

and Mugwui, im going to cruiser park this weekend for the show n shine at the off road expo. Also what size tires do you have ? im looking to fit a maxis bighorn 235/85/16

Basket is sitting in the shed, not sure what im doing with it now.

What day are you heading out and how far is it?
The Cheapest place to get VHT is Auto One, but I must admit I didn't look at Bunnings.
If you want to sell your basket I may be interested.

i wouldn't worry about vht personally i would just etch prime and then a spray
with quick dry enamel hammertone.

etch primer is definately the go. nothing will stick to alloy as well as this

im going to cuiser park saturday morning until about 11 am, its about 1h 30mins north from brisbane near jimna

It might not be any more expensive to powdercoat it, but the time you buy too much primer and too much paint and muck around.

It'd be worth getting a price I reckon.
