Found my steering issue was loose bolts on the steering box to chassis mount. They are a bitch to get to, on my Vitara, so if you have a radiator out, or engine out type job underway, good idea to check your steering box nuts/bolts. Never had that happen before, so could be just bad luck, or a previous mechanics oversight. I've never touched them myself. Symptoms were occassional spongy feeling, and occassional evil road camber following, but was often perfectly fine. Been checking ball joints, tie rods etc, all were old, but ok.
