Have noticed a problem with the charging system in the gv. Had to replace the Alternator the other day as bearings had gone south. Anyway the charge wire from the alt is tiny and wasnt allowing enough power through to the batteries. Every time the isolator cut in the voltage would drop and it would cut out again.... And when headlights or A/C are on voltage to the isolator wasnt enough to pull in the isolator. Main Battery is fully charged.
Multimeter readings ... (Grounded to Chasis) at Cig socker. 12.4V at battery 12.6v at Alt terminal. 13.8....
I dummied up a 4guage cable to run from the Alt. to the main battery through an AMP meter. The isolator now cut in almost immediately and i was getting an extra 23 Amps to the batteries... 2nd Battery was a bit flat from running the fridge.
Voltage at the battery after fitting the extra charge wire is now same as at the alternator.
I looks to me that the charge wire from the alt is connected to the main starter cable somewhere in the loom and then is tapped of to the fuse box ... Cable size is way undersize to get best effect......
My question for the Battery guru's is will it damage anything by leaving the 4guage connected direct from the Alt to the battery along with the factory charge wire? I'll get a monster fuse to protect it ....
