Hey guys,
Im about to put my front hubs back together after replacing kingpin bearings and wheel bearings etc. I was wondering what sort of grease i should use on each bearing? I know CV's want moly grease but im wondering if i should use it on the king pins as well considering they are in the same assembly. Ill be using standard wheel bearing grease on the wheel bearings obviously.

I just ude wheel bearing grease, but given the amount of movement the king pin bearing actually see, I'd say moly grease would be fine too.

Make sure you pack the wheel bearings and king pin bearings properly. Simply smearing grease on the outside is not enough.

I used the high temperature high prsesure grease for the bearings in mine (castrol brand i think, got it from bursons). Bought a 4L bucket of it. should last me many years.

what did u use on the cv's?

It was different type of grease, it came in a little plastic bag, kind of thing you get with the CV boot kits. It was special CV grease of some kind. (CV grease was a dark grey colour, bearing grease is a yellowy brown)

I just asked the guy at bursons for CV grease and he gave me that.

CV and wheel bearing greases won't mix as the wheel bearings are isolated from the CV but the kingpin bearing and CV grease will get combined to a small degree.

I use Castrol LMM (CV grease) in the CV's and kingpins and use HTB in the wheel bearings.

Going to jump in on the act here I think, save me opening another thread in a wee while..

How about grease nipples along the drive train? Think the FSM suggests chassis grease, is that the same as HTB grease?

Also, before I get the car up, grease gun in hand, are there only grease nipples there or do some require needle adaptor?

Nothing is as good as HTB2 for bearings, it has the highest melting point of any grease available in aust. LMM for CVs.
I also use HTB2 as a chassis grease but only because that is what's in the gun

Well jobs done now, I realised they wouldnt mix after i put them back together. Used moly on the kingpins and cv's and bearing grease on the main as you should. The bearing grease I use is pretty hardcore shep. Dont know what the stuff you talk about is like, but this is really difficult to get out of the gun its THAT thick and sticky.

For those who want to know why I did the job, my kingpin bearing on the drivers side disintegrated. Got pix ill post later in my build thread but its beers for now.....

I had a problem with finding decent wheel bearing grease. I used Castrol lmm cv grease in the pins and hub. My brother got me onto penrite high temp wheel bearing grease. Because i smeared some cv grease on the back of the hub it mixed with the bearing grease and it lost colour and thickness. Which in turn fucked the bearings, and before you say it no they weren't too tight. So a new set of good quality bearings and $18 tube of moreys grease later all is good again. So from what im told its the clay based grease that doesn't mix with other grease. And moreys grease is the ducks nuts, im told its used by caterpillar.

Hopefully that helps someone not make my mistake Haha.
