Hi Guys. I have a weird silly question. I have a t-max 6000 lb winch in my bar on my jimny. My question is, i have the abs unit so i only have a single battery of about 40 Ah, So my question is, willl the battery affect the pulling power of my winch? Can the battery give the sufficient current that the winch pulls under almost full load.? I mean the car is idling but at what rmp does the alterator actually charge the battery? At some stages, on a single winch line, in a mud puddle i can basicly pull the winch dead, like the load was to much for the winch and you can hear how the motor turns even more slowly, we attached the snatchblock and it was much better then. Can you help me to tell me if there is a problem or is this just the lack of pounds on the winch ? Also can some help me with maintanance on this model? how do i look after it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvu1C75VRLAThank you

I'm no expert but with my winch on my jimny when it was running off the front battery (standard little one) it did the same thing starts off good but then you can hear the motor on the winch slowly dieing but now I have it running off the back battery ( truck battery) it is constant in pulling power, run the block but it doubles the pulling power of the winch.
I have no idea about maintance tho and would also like to know what to do (including plasma rope)

Dont go deep cycle, not recommended for winching, I use 2 batterys and override the isolator to keep them linked whilst winching, otherwise the isolator solenoid drops out as soon as you start winching. consider a portable 2nd battery pack with in built charger. leave it plugged in at home 100% of the time (if its a ctek charger, that way you know battery is always good) and take it wheeling. Use as required. just make sure you have quality connections as the winch draws shitloads. (6000 or not) something like this https://www.iautosecurepay.com.au/ssl/p ... 764&cat=28

Also, if you do have a dual batt, never put the winch on the auxiliary battery, always on the main. A good hi amp alternator will be helpfull.

How many amps does that thing draw under full load?
You can use that to pick an appropriate battery.

Just a few points and this is my understanding anyway.
The first thing to do is look at your alternator. Whatever current your winch needs will come from a combination of the alternator and the battery. If you have a 75 amp alternator and the winch is drawing 200 amps then 125 amps will be delivered by the battery. When you stop winching the alternator will put that current back into the battery. However, no one with a Suzuki has an alternator that can deliver 200 amps so that means you will always be delivering current from the battery. It is not the A/h of the battery that is the most important measure but the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). This is a measure of how much current the battery can deliver for short periods.
Get the battery with the highest CCA that you can fit. Connect the winch to the main battery as this is usually the one that will have the highest charge rate (depending upon how you hook up your second battery). For most Suzuki's you won't get a big enough battery under the engine bay for continuous winching. Scales idea of hooking them up together will give you double the capability but ideally both batteries should be the same type for the best results.
If you draw a high current from the battery the internal temperature of the battery will rise. It is this heat that usually destroys lead acid batteries (not sure about other types). The best way to winch would be to do it in short bursts and with a 50/50 or longer duty cycle. That means winch for 20 seconds then wait for a minute before giving it another 20 seconds. That way you give the alternator a chance to put some current back into the battery and also you give the battery a chance to cool. The figures can be debated as the charging will heat the battery as well and there are lots of variables but anyway if you take it slowly enough you can get away with quite a lot.
As macguyverjimny said using a snatch block lowers the current draw need for the winch but doubles the time. This combined with not using the winch continuously will help to prolong the life of the battery.
Interested in any other thoughts on this.

Thats interesting, coz afterthat vid, i had battery problems for two days, in was in the december holiday, my jimny had to be jump started each day, and then in ja uary we replaced it, i had a hinch that it was something to do about the winching, which might make more sence now,
I thought i need to push up the a/h,butnow i see, i will then see what i can do to suit my budget,
The waiting of winching might be rediculous when you are out on a weeking with your mates, so then i will just be recovered with a strap,
I use my winch like never, and almost feel like its a waste caring all that weight just for that seldom usage!
Any ideas or strategies on how i can make more use of the winch? If i want to. Use it more regularly then i will need anew battery setup to be able to deliver the current.
Thank you.

Like you, I have a winch that does not get used. If is there for emergency use only. If I really have to use it then I will just take my time with it. Last time I used a winch was to put my Land Rover back on it's wheels after I rolled. I was really glad my mate had a winch. One thing to remember though is that you should service them each year if you expect it to work when you do need it.

How do you service them? Mine is constantly getting covered in mud and other nice things but I see no grease nipples or anything like that, tho it does get used at least once a week

The instructions that I got were to dismantle it, clean all the parts, grease them and reassemble. It is water getting onto the working parts that causes all the harm. Have not had to do this with mine yet.

My 2 cents and I have said this before... I have a WARN m8000. I replaced the original with a slightly bigger Optima AGM (largest that would fit), as the original did not fill even the plastic tray that was provided. I have used the winch to haul me up some decent pulls with little effect on winch speed. I still have the original alternator. I did however get it waterproofed whilst it was apart, after I wrecked the brushes in a mud hole. I believe that the AGMs have a greater usable capacity, both in the bottom end and in the top end. Meaning, you can charge them more fully and discharge them to a lower capacity and still be usable, and recharge without damaging their usable life span. Use that for a while. IF its not doing the job, upsize the alternator. If thats not good enough, go the second battery. I think that is a natural course of action. Add to that, the standard batteries can leak through their filler/inspection caps. (specially when they are on their side )

could always go a Lithium battery haha for $800 you can get a 40Ah battery that will still outdo any other Lead acid battery of the same size

My tmax9000 came with instuctions on how to rotate the gearbox incase the lever is in the wrong spot. I followed that and removed the motor, drum and gearbox, bought some good grease and packed it in.

When you service the gearbox make sure you DO NOT grease the clutch outer ring, it will not spool freely if you do. Use a small amount of machinery oil. The ring I refer to is what the handle directly manipulates. Grease the inside of it is fine. I have some pdf of doing it somewhere if you require.
