Well im not very educated on the sj410 ...but a lot of guys fit the 1l case into the Sierra so I was just thinking maybe u could fit a later sj413 case in somehow maybe these other guys know more about it ???

Yeah, I dunno, how would that make anything easier though?

Keensy, we are past that part of the conversation.

1983 SJ40? Does yours have the "4wd" light on the dash? You need a 4wd switch case to install reduction gears. The cheapest place to buy them will be Low Range Offroad.

Note that the precentages listed in their chart will be different for your vehicle as they are calculated for a 1.3 transfer. The 4.16 gears will give you the same Hi range and 63% lower Lo range. The 4.9 set will give you 4% lower Hi, and 88% lower Lo. If you fit either of these gear sets to your transfer case, you will require 1 factory gear from a 1.3 case, so it might be easier to find a 2nd hand case to build your new gears into and swap the whole lot over.

To the OP, I reckon a 1.3 case fitted with 6.5:1 reduction gears is the ticket.

AZ just did something funny :?

303 zuke was talking about finding a switch light 1.0 case, or a 1.3 transfer case and putting crawler gears in.

You first response asked me if I knew there was a difference between 1.0 cases.

I would not have bought a 1.0 case to put into my 1.3 LWB if there was no difference. From what I searched it is a 12% reduction over a 1.3 transfer.

Therefore to run 31's he'd need as much gearing as possible with the 1.0.

Offroad w/ the exception of sand and some mud, you just about can't get enough reduction.

My question was could u just fit a 1.3l case ......I was just wondering if u could fit a 1.3 t/case and have more options for gearing.

A 1.0 switch case goes directly into a 1.3 NT, therefore a 1.3 NT case should go into a 1.0. Worst come worst he gets a WT case, then you have to change the flanges. Edit: and the drum handbrake from the 1.0 onto the WT case (not a factor for NT case).

I have 30.5 with 6.5:1's in a 1.3, which is less rev happy than a 1.0.

Onroad it is great, low is a tad too low in first. Having said this, reverse and 1st has its place backing trailers etc. The only place I don't like my 6.5s is sand.

I just go slower now. In a way there is a gear for every situation.

With 30s and 6.5s a 1l would still be geared roughly 5% higher than standard, it'd be okay with a healthy motor but still not ideal.

Steves would have been geared almost 18% higher than standard, a bigger difference than bolting on 31" tyres without changing the gearing. Sorry Steve but the only way i can see that being okay on the road is if you never planned to use 4th gear.

My mates 1 litre had a tall 1st as well 8O

I also did say he'd want as much gearing as possible with a 1 litre, but should not have written "6.5's is the ticket".

That's what I said. You need a gear from the 1.3 transfer, so buy a whole 1.3 case to build the gears into.

Suttman, you still haven't given us info about your vehicle. Does it have the 4wd light in a little box above the Ign Key? This will make a difference in installing a case with reduction gears.

Sideways, when calculating the stock gearing of an SJ40, remember that they came out with FR78 or 6.00-16 tyres, which are about 28.75". Beside the lower transfer gearing, they also had lower diff ratios than the 1.3s. I ran 30x9.5 BFG on an SJ40 with just 4.16 gears. Fair on and good off road. 4.9 gears on 30s will be close to factory in Hi, and excellent in Lo. I think 6.5 gears on something as small as 30s or even 31s will be a drag to drive

They sure do! Ages ago I tried to build a Hybrid LJ/1l gearbox so I could get a 3.835 1st gear instead of 3.163 1st like 1ls normally have but the Suzuki gods said nope.

My fairly worn FR78s measure just under 26" so I based all that off a 27" tyre, which from what I've read is about right. Bartreads are such an oddball that I don't count them. They weigh nothing, are mounted to rims that don't weigh anything, have the contact patch of a bicycle tyre and aren't really suitable for on road use anyway.

I agree , I run 4:9.1 in the case with 3:9.1 diff gears and sometimes I find it a bit low in first , especially when im waiting to turn out of a servo in traffic. Its great off road .but in saying that horses for courses :)

Dude, 1l gearing is completely different to 1.3l gearing. They have 4.11 diff gears, you can't even fit 3.9s or 3.7s without switching out the whole diff housing, not that there would be any point in fitting them. 1ls need to be doing close to 5000rpm at 100km/h to get the best out them.

When I first got my 1l it had a very strong motor and 26" tyres. I kept on accidentally taking off in 3rd and not even realizing what I'd done until I was going far to fast to be in 1st. This might sound impressive but 1ls are geared really low and 3rd is only good for 70km/h. It certainly wasn't possible once I upped the tyre size though. That was a particularly strong motor too, on gravel it'd spin the wheels in 3rd if you just pushed your foot to the floor.

Fwiw mine started out on 26" tyres (206/70r15) and when they died I put some 650x16 truck tyres on that I had siting around. These were retreads, measured 28" and weighed as much as a small country. Performance took a dive off a large cliff. When I fitted the 30s (30x9.5r15s, measured 29.5) I didn't notice a difference. I attribute that to the stupendous weight of the truck tyres.

Full stock? Fuck, I hope mine goes that well. I ony have a sick 800cc in it at the moment, but my 1l is pretty much all back together after its rebuild. So you drove around ungeared with 30s? What was it like on hills?
